HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY - In Memory of Heroes

"They are dead; but they live \in each Patriot's breast, And their names are engraven on honor's bright crest."

Memorial Day commemorates those who have sacrificed to keep America free.

Men like John Finn, who
died this past week. Retired Navy officer Finn was the last remaining Medal of Honor recipient for actions during the Japanese attack of December 7, 1941. According to his Medal of Honor citation, during the attack by Japanese forces at Kaneohe Bay, Lt. Finn secured and manned a .50-caliber machinegun mounted on a completely exposed section of the parking ramp, which was under heavy enemy machinegun fire.

Although painfully wounded many times, Finn continued to man this gun to return the enemy's fire vigorously, and with telling effect. He did so throughout the enemy strafing and bombing attacks and with complete disregard for his own personal safety. It was only by specific orders that he was persuaded to leave his post to seek medical attention. Despite his irrefutable courage and valor, Finn continuously refused the accolade of hero.

When called a hero
during a 2009 interview, Finn responded, "That damned hero stuff is a bunch crap, I guess. [...] You gotta understand that there's all kinds of heroes, but they never get a chance to be in a hero's position."

Finn, like many Medal of Honor from World War II chose instead to identify the many others who died in the Pacific Islands, fields of Italy, jungles of Vietnam, sands of the Middle East and hills of Pennsylvania. Those valiant souls, who not knowing what enemy waited outside or overhead, chose to press forward, sacrificing their lives for the liberty of all.

Heroes like
1st Lt. Alonzo Cushing, whose valiant stand protecting the Union on July 3rd, 1863 will never be forgotten. With his men from the Battery A, 4th U.S. Artillery, the West Point graduate was defending Union ground on Cemetery Ridge against General Pickett in what has come to be known as "Pickett's Charge." Though having been wounded in both the groin and shoulder during the two-hour onslaught, Cushing stood his ground and the Confederate forces eventually retreated, having taken a large number of casualties from which the Confederacy could not recover.

And United States Army Sgt.
Leslie Sabo, who in 1970 died in Cambodia while trying to save his fellow soldiers from a North Vietnamese ambush. Sabo kept his men from being surrounded, threw himself on top of a wounded soldier to protect him from a grenade. While shot and wounded from the grenade, Sabo made the ultimate sacrifice while providing covering fire for a medical helicopter to airlift wounded soldiers.

Memorial Day is about young 19-year old Spc. Ross McGinnis who, when an enemy grenade was thrown into his Humvee in Iraq, rather than leaping from the gunner's hatch to safety,
Private McGinnis made the courageous decision to protect his crew. A selfless act of bravery, in which he was mortally wounded, Private McGinnis covered the live grenade, pinning it between his body and the vehicle and absorbing most of the explosion.

Memorial Day is exemplified by the names of all heroes — known and unsung — etched on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, the survivors who gather in remembrance every May, the families who hold vigil for lost loved ones.

Theirs is the greatest work that can be done in a world where tyranny still exists, and such service has made it possible for freedom and independence to spread into regions where once it did not exist. For fighting, not just in the defense of Americans' liberty, but of all peoples speaks of the nobility of our fighting men and women. They do not have to fight, but they volunteer anyway; our guardians of freedom and the American way of life. May their remembrance be as lasting as the land they honor.

On this Memorial Day, each of us should take time to remember those whose sacrifice has made each of our freedom possible, and rededicate ourselves to defending freedom both at home and abroad.

Special Memorial Day Message from Governor Brewer

Special Memorial Day Message From Governor Brewer

Today, each of us should take time to remember that every minute of every hour of every day we live in a free nation. It is a freedom protected by the service of men and women in uniform, standing in foreign lands, isolated posts, always standing against the forces of fear and tyranny.

Because it is a privilege to express our gratitude to those whose sacrifices serve as constant reminders of the high price of liberty; as Governor of Arizona, I have proclaimed this day -- May 31st, 2010 -- “Arizona Memorial Day.”

We remember and honor all those courageous men and women of our armed forces who have risked and lost their lives to protect America’s interests, to defend our freedom, to preserve
our values, and to advance the ideals of democracy.

I have directed that in respect and recognition of these courageous men and women, all veterans of the United States Military Services, state and local government officials, educators, students, historians, and all patriotic citizens of this great state and nation are encouraged to observe Memorial Day, May 31, 2010 with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

God bless you and your families, God bless the memory of our fallen heroes, and may God bless Arizona and the United States of America.

Only an American Speaks for Us By HJS

The shameless pandering, apologizing, genuflecting and Israel-bashing that President Obama chose as his hallmark in Middle East relations has all been for naught. One might have thought that to many in the Middle East, such groveling from a “leader of the free world” would be good news; after all, could it not mean that this country is now on “their” side?

The soul of the Arab, the Bedouin, respects above all strength, bravery, and loyalty whether it is from a brother Arab or an enemy. A person lacking in even one of those areas is considered not only unworthy, but dishonored by the fiercely independent Bedouin. Our beloved John Wayne said more than once in his movies, “Never apologize; it’s a sign of weakness.” We grew up with John Wayne and people like him who expressed the American philosophy over and over until it was part of us. We could express an apology for some stupid thing we did, but never for what and who we are. Americans know all of this. Someone else might not. And that someone else obviously does not speak for us. The Bedouins know this, but it will not keep them from taking advantage of us however they can. Trying to construct a mosque or a cultural center near ground zero is only a first step. By using the name CORDOBA, they are telling the rest of the world that they now own us. It is like building a monument to the 19 murderers on the graves of their victims. As long as we express weakness, however we do it, we can expect more and greater insults to our nation and who we are.

Obama Makes Little Headway among Arabic-speaking Muslims
by Daniel PipesMay 29, 2010Cross-posted from
National Review Online

Barack Obama entered with high hopes of improving the U.S. image among Muslims worldwide, hauling out his middle name, giving his first interview as president to Al-Arabiya television, quoting hadith, giving major speeches in Istanbul and Cairo, and talking ceaselessly of "respect" for Muslims. Where has this got him?

The Gallup Poll conducted face-to-face interviews with 1,000 adults aged 15 and older in each of Mauritania, Algeria, Egypt, the Palestinian Territories, Lebanon, and Iraq (a curious collection of places). It asked the same question once in 2008, twice in 2009, and now for the first of two times in 2010: "Do you approve or disapprove of the job performance of the leadership of the United States?" The margin of error ranges from ±3.1 percent to ±3.9 percent.

Gallup's results show something of a wash: Obama does distinctly better than George W. Bush in Mauritania (going from 44 to 69 percent) and Egypt (6 to 19 percent). He improves on Bush just over the margin of error in Algeria (going from 25 to 30 percent). He improves on Bush within the margin of error in the Palestinian Territories (from 13 to 16 percent). The two are tied in Lebanon (at 25 percent). And Obama does worse than Bush in Iraq (going from 35 to 30 percent).

Also noteworthy is that Obama's current standing has declined among all six of the populations from what it was in mid-2009. The smallest drop (3 percent) was in Iraq and the largest (18 percent) in Egypt.

Comments: (1) These polls register a highly unimpressive showing for someone who placed so much emphasis on improving U.S. standing among Muslims. (2) The graph of Arabic-speakers' attitudes toward Obama differs from that of Americans' views: the former went up and then down, while the latter went down and then flattened out. That said, both at present share a downward trend.

McCain Lands Punch in Border Security Bout by Mickey McCarter

Friday, 28 May 2010

Panel approves 6,000 troops for border over Obama protest

John McCain, a former Navy boxer, must appreciate a political knockout when he scores one. He's not quite there yet but he demonstrated some fancy footwork Thursday that could stun the White House on the subject of border security.

McCain (R-Ariz.) feinted with an attempt to fund 6,000 National Guard troops on the US southern border with an amendment to the 2010 supplemental appropriations bill (HR 4899) Thursday morning.

The amendment failed but McCain already had readied a second punch in the form of an amendment to the Fiscal 2011 National Defense Authorization Act (HR 5136)--an amendment approved by the Senate Armed Services Committee.

"I am pleased that the Senate Armed Services Committee today approved my bipartisan amendment to immediately send 6,000 National Guard troops to our southwest border," McCain said in a
statement Thursday.

"Deploying the National Guard is essential to securing our US-Mexico border," he added.

"Families living in Arizona should not suffer from the daily threats caused by illegal immigration, drug trafficking, and human smuggling. It is the federal government's obligation to protect all Americans by securing the borders, and deploying 6,000 National Guard is a critical first step."

Indeed it's literally the first step of a 10-point action plan developed by McCain and Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) to augment border security.

The plan specifically calls for 3,000 National Guard troops in Arizona until the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) can hire and train 3,000 Border Patrol agents to augment border security. The White House disapproved of the amendment and pointedly wrote Tuesday to Carl Levin (D-Mich.), chair of the Armed Services Committee, to warn him that Congress could not order the President to deploy troops.

McCain's amendment to do so passed the committee anyway. It likely will survive a vote in the full Senate but it may encounter opposition in conference committee when reconciled with the House version of the bill, currently being debated in that chamber.

President Barack Obama Tuesday approved sending 1,200 troops to the US southern border and requested $500 million to fund them, but McCain said that was not enough.

Sending 6,000 National Guard troops to the US southern border effectively would duplicate Operation Jump Start, which President George Bush ordered in 2006-2008. In that operation, National Guardsmen supported US Border Patrol until the service could grow from roughly 12,000 to 18,000 agents

Millionaire Mills Makes Manly Mistake

Millionaire Mills Makes “Manly” Mistake

From Mary Peters, Former United States Secretary of Transportation:

“Millionaire Buz Mills thinks that it takes a “real man” to secure Arizona’s border. But America knows differently. They know that Governor Jan Brewer, a strong woman, has been taking the Federal Government to task on our broken borders.

“Governor Jan Brewer has had a consistent track record in fighting illegal immigration. As Secretary of State, she defended Arizona’s mandatory requirement of identification at the polls all the way to the Supreme Court – and won. As Governor, she has denied all services for those in the country illegally and returned non-violent criminal aliens to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She is also implementing her
Border Security Enhancement Program.

“Governor Brewer sent a message to Washington by signing SB 1070 and has stood up to defend it against the liberal East Coast media, Rev. Al Sharpton, Phoenix Mayor Gordon, and the rest who threaten to boycott the state.

“Meanwhile, Buz didn’t even take an interest in illegal immigration until Governor Brewer made it a national topic. Even more unbelievable, on several occasions, Mills has claimed that he opposes Arizona’s tough employer sanctions law.

“Now, the Mills campaign claims that the employer sanctions comments were a mistake and his “real man” mailer was a misprint.

Arizona can’t afford Buz Mills’ mistakes.

“Arizona has a true leader, and that WOMAN is our Governor, Jan Brewer.”

STATEMENT BY GOVERNOR JAN BREWER

“Today the legal team I have appointed to defend the State of Arizona in the legal challenges to Arizona’s new immigration laws met with senior officials from the United States Department of Justice. The meeting was held at the request of the U.S. Department of Justice.

“The Department attorneys were advised that I believe the federal government should use its legal resources to fight illegal immigration, not the State of Arizona. They were further advised that on behalf of the State of Arizona, I will ensure the immigration laws we passed are vigorously defended all the way to the United States Supreme Court if necessary.

“For some inexplicable reason, the Department of Justice officials met with the Arizona Attorney General hours before meeting with the State of Arizona’s legal team, and then allowed the Attorney General to hold a press conference to discuss the meeting. This level of coordination between the Attorney General and the Obama Administration is disturbingly similar to the coordination with Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords earlier this week on President Obama’s still unclear plan to deploy up to 1,200 National Guard troops to the border.

“Due to the Attorney General’s opposition to Arizona’s immigration laws as set forth in S.B. 1070, the Legislature required Attorney General Goddard to act at the direction of the Governor in any challenge to S.B. 1070 as amended by H.B. 2162. The Legislature also gave the Governor authority to hire outside counsel if necessary to defend the law on behalf of the State instead of using the Attorney General.

“The Legislature gave me this authority because of its lack of confidence in the Attorney General’s willingness to vigorously defend this legislation that is so critical to protecting the safety and welfare of Arizona’s citizens. Last year, I instructed the Attorney General to change his position on behalf of the State of Arizona in the Horne v. Flores case involving a challenge to the Arizona’s English language learner laws. He refused and the U.S. Supreme Court ultimately rejected his position.

“Due to Attorney General Goddard’s curious coordination with the U.S. Department of Justice today and his consistent opposition to Arizona’s new immigration laws, I will direct my legal team to defend me and the State of Arizona rather than the Attorney General in the lawsuits challenging Arizona’s immigration laws.”

Jim Waring will fight to restore the economy

I am often asked if I enjoy running for Congress. The truth is, I love knocking on doors and meeting voters. This past week after knocking on thousands of doors, I’m happy to report that I have turned in nearly five times as many signatures as the law requires.

I will out work all of my opponents in this campaign. Everyday I go door to door to reach out and meet voters in the district.

Over the past months I have received some amazing letters & emails from constituents that I have met. Julie Williams from Phoenix wrote to my office saying,

“After 60 years as an Arizona native, Jim was the FIRST individual running for office to stop by my home and introduce himself. No big push or fancy footwork, just a kind smile, handshake and humble introduction. I have now read his stand on the policies that I am most interested in and agree that he will best represent the values I believe in. Thanks for taking the personal approach and GOOD LUCK!”

I want to go to Washington to make sure that YOU are represented. Yesterday the federal deficit ballooned to $13,000,000,000,000. Higher taxes, stimulus projects, bailouts, an unsustainable health care overhaul, and irresponsible earmarks -- this INSANITY must stop NOW!

Taxpayers have had enough. In Arizona I’ve voted to cut wasteful spending and I will continue to fight for you in Washington.

Government shouldn’t create jobs – let Americans do it! Government needs to get out of the way and unleash our greatest engine for prosperity; the innovation and hard work of the American people.

Let’s put a stop to high taxes, cumbersome regulations and frivolous lawsuits so those who wish to start and grow a thriving business can do so. Creating a favorable business climate which produces new jobs will be one of my biggest priorities in Congress.

Our country’s record debt and deficits must be controlled.

The reckless spending spree of the current administration takes away available credit for new business. In order to aid America’s economic recovery, I will fight against massive new energy taxes, the ending of the secret ballot process for workers, and any policy that unfairly burdens citizens in the workforce.

Sincerely,

Jim Waring

SESTAK SCANDAL GROWS...AND STILL STINKS By DICK MORRIS & EILEEN MCGANN

Published on DickMorris.com on May 28, 2010

Printer-Friendly Version

The New York Times revealed this afternoon that anonymous sources have informed it that Obama's chief of staff Rahm Emanuel asked former President Bill Clinton to offer Congressman Joe Sestak a high but unpaid advisory post in the Administration if he would drop out of the Senate race against Senator Arlen Specter.

One post mentioned was service on the President's Intelligence Advisory Board. The idea was to immunize Obama and Rahm from possible criminal prosecution by using Clinton, not a government employee, as a cut out and to keep the offer to an unpaid job in hopes of not running afoul of the federal bribery statute. But these evasions will not blunt the force of the law.

If Clinton acted at Emanuel's request, he was Rahm's agent and the Chief of Staff is still on the hook. And, an unpaid position is still "something of value" within the meaning of the bribery statute which prohibits the offering of something of value in return for a vote. And, remember why they wanted Sestak out of the race.

The White House needed Specter's vote to kill filibusters and could only get it if he would switch parties, a move he conditioned on getting Sestak to drop out and assure him a clear field for the nomination of his new party. So the bribe offer to Sestak was made by an agent of a government employee, it involved something
of value, and it was to procure a vote in the Senate -- all the elements needed for a felony to have taken place.

In a previous column (read it at DickMorris.com) Dick and Fox News Judicial Analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano suggest that Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett, now the Republican nominee for Governor, should empanel a grand jury to get to the bottom of this affair. Today's revelation makes this ever more urgent.

Is the Impeachment of Barack Obama Moving Forward?

Is the Impeachment of Barack Obama Moving Forward?

By Floyd and Mary Beth Brown

We have seen it on car bumpers, even on T-shirts and some posters glued along city streets, but until this week serious talk about the impeachment of Barack Obama has mostly been the domain of anti- Obama websites such as FreeRepublic.com, Americanthinker.com, or the very active ImpeachObamaCampaign.com.

Now, all of a sudden, everyone is talking about the possibility of impeaching Barack Obama.

Drudge is writing about it. Sean Hannity is talking about it. Dick Morris is saying that the potential scandal is "enormous.".

Karl Rove called it an "extraordinary charge.” WorldNetDaily.com wrote that "it could be grounds for impeachment." What happened? The story surrounding the alleged bribe of Congressman Joe Sestak initially broke way back in February. We wrote about it then, but it never broke out into the mainstream media. But because of activist
pressure and the courageous work of California Congressman Darrell Issa the story refused to die.

ImpeachObamaCampaign.com alone has delivered more than 750,000 petitions to Congress in support of impeachment. Make no mistake, patriotic Americans are driving this sudden turn of events. It is a testament to what can happen when patriotic Americans refuse to look the other way, and they make their voices heard in a real and meaningful way. It didn’t hurt that Obama has failed to answer the questions surrounding the attempted bribe of Congressman Joe Sestak.

So did Barack Hussein Obama commit a felony by offering Congressman Joe Sestak a "high ranking" Cabinet position to drop out of the Pennsylvania Senate race against Sen. Arlen Specter?

Let's be clear. The commission of an actual felony is not actually required in order to impeach a sitting president, but if Sestak's allegation is true, and if Barack Hussein Obama's fingerprints are all over this offer, that’s a felony, and drawing up Articles of Impeachment against Barack Obama becomes a necessity.

McCain Gets Rejected Troop Request Back In Senate

By Andrew TaylorThe Associated Press

May 27, 2010

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. John McCain resurrected a proposal to send an additional 6,000 National Guard troops to the U.S-Mexico border just hours after President Barack Obama's Democratic allies in the Senate killed the plan.

The Arizona Republican says security along the order has deteriorated so badly that 3,000 guard troops are needed just to help protect his state. Even though McCain won support from a dozen Democrats, he failed Thursday to muster the 60-vote supermajority required to adopt his plan under Senate rules.

Later, McCain prevailed in a key Senate panel and inserted the measure into a defense policy bill that will come to the floor this summer.

Democrats also repelled more than $2 billion in additional border security spending proposed by border-state Republicans John Cornyn of Texas and Jon Kyl of Arizona.

The action came as the Senate continued debate on an almost $60 billion measure funding Obama's troop surge in Afghanistan, foreign aid and domestic disaster relief.

The GOP proposals were comparable to those made several years ago when many Republicans pressed for border security steps, such as a border fence, instead of a more comprehensive approach to overhauling the nation's immigration system. Obama supports comprehensive immigration reforms, but prospects for substantive legislation appear bleak in an election year. Just Tuesday, he promised to send 1,200 Guard troops to the border.

In the past, McCain has advocated changes to immigration laws that would give illegal immigrants in the U.S. an opportunity to earn their citizenship. But as violence along the border has escalated—and in the face of a spirited primary challenge from former Rep. J.D. Hayworth—McCain has adopted a harder line on immigration issues.

"The borders are broken," McCain said Thursday. "We have an obligation to our citizens to secure our border and allow them to lead lives where they not live in fear."

Kyl proposed expanding a program that throws illegal immigrants in jail for two weeks before deporting them back to Mexico, which he said is a deterrent to them trying again.

Cornyn wanted money for state and local law enforcement agencies, unmanned drone aircraft and other equipment, and additional Border Patrol officers and immigration agents.

Both amendments got 54 votes but fell short of the required 60-vote supermajority.

"Until we deal with this broken border, we are not going to be able to deal with other aspects of our broken immigration system," Cornyn said.

A top Democrat said Republicans were throwing money at the problem and urged waiting until Obama sends up his border security plan next week.

"This is a huge amount of money ... from colleagues who talk fiscal moderation," said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. "It's sort of throwing an enormous amount of money at the problem."

Obama on Tuesday promised to send 1,200 Guard troops to the border to support efforts to block drug trafficking and temporarily supplement Border Patrol agents until more agents can be trained. He also pledged $500 million for improved border security. The money could be added to the measure during House-Senate negotiations.
