MAKE NO MISTAKE: "CAP-AND-TRADE" = TAX

Friends..........Remember when you pay an electric bill, when you fill up your gas tank, when you buy a airline ticket , when you buy a car , the next time you plug in a light bulb or walk into a restaurant you can thank Gabby Giffords who voted for CAP & TRADE which equals a big fat tax on just about everything we consume which will be paid for by you and I.

Remember who helped create higher un employment by passing the BIGGEST TAX INCREASE in the history of the United States. Gabby Giffords voted with 211 of her democrat colleagues to create a carbon tax which will kill jobs in the middle of a recession. All this done under the premise of helping prevent global warming. All of this done as a scheme to finance Obama health care. Not too smart.

Is this change we can trust? Now , more than ever before friends .........CHANGE CAN'T WAIT !!

The Hidden Costs: Obama's Energy Scheme Means Higher Prices, Fewer Jobs
______________________________________________________________________

Obama: "[The bill is] paid for by the polluters who currently emit dangerous carbon emissions." (President Barack Obama, Remarks On Energy Legislation, The White House, 6/25/09)

THE TRUTH: SO-CALLED "CAP-AND-TRADE" SCHEME A HARD-HITTING TAX ON ALL AMERICANS

CBO Says National Energy Tax Will Hit Consumers, Not Corporate Profits. "Under a cap-and-trade program, firms would not ultimately bear most of the costs of the allowances but instead would pass them along to their customers in the form of higher prices. Such price increases would stem from the restriction on emissions and would occur regardless of whether the government sold emission allowances or gave them away." (CBO Senior Advisor Terry Dinan, "The Distributional Consequences of a Cap-and-Trade Program for CO2 Emissions,"
Testimony Before The Subcommittee On Income Security And Family Support House Committee On Ways And Means, 3/12/09)

Even Obama Admits Plan Would Make Energy Prices "Skyrocket" For Consumers. Obama: "When I was asked earlier about the issue of coal, you know, under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. Even regardless of what I say about whether coal is good or bad. Because I'm capping greenhouse gases, coal power plants, you know, natural gas, you name it, whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, uh, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers." (Sen. Barack Obama, Interview with San Francisco Chronicle Editorial Board, 1/17/08)

New York Times' Thomas Friedman: "Cap-And-Trade" Supporters Use Proposal To Hide Fact That It's A Tax. "Advocates of cap-and-trade argue that it is preferable to a simple carbon tax because it fixes a national cap on carbon emissions and it 'hides the ball' -- it doesn't use the word 'tax' -- even though it amounts to one." (Thomas L. Friedman, "Show Us The Ball,"
The New York Times, 4/8/09)

Chicago Tribune Editorial: Every American Affected By National Energy Tax. "Democratic leaders need to slow down. This proposed legislation would affect every American individual and company for generations. There's a huge amount of money at stake: $845 billion for the federal government in the first 10 years ... This requires careful study, not a Springfield-style here's-the-bill-let's-vote rush job." (Editorial, "Too Big, Too Fast,"
The Chicago Tribune, 6/25/09)

Denver Post Editorial: Costs Of "Cap-And-Trade" Will Be Passed On To Consumers, Hurt America's Global Economic Competitiveness. "The debate on such a transformative issue ought to continue and broaden. How is it possible the 1,200-page American Clean Energy and Security Act is being rushed through Congress in a repeat of what happened with the stimulus package? Has anyone read this one? ... Fashioned to avoid appearing like a new tax, the measure nevertheless would work like one, as the higher costs of meeting the caps get passed on to consumers. The measure risks hurting our competitiveness globally without effectively lowering global greenhouse gases." (Editorial, "Cap And Trade Is Wrong Solution,"
The Denver Post, 6/26/09)

Congressman John Dingell (D-MI): Cap-And-Trade = "Great Big" Tax. "Nobody in this country realizes that cap and trade is a tax. And it's a great big one." (Rep. John Dingell, House Energy and Commerce Committee and House Science Committee,
Joint Hearing, 4/24/09)

Warren Buffet Says National Energy Tax Will Hurt Poor Americans. "I think if you get into the way it was written, it's a huge tax and there's no sense calling it anything else. I mean, it is a tax. And it's a fairly regressive tax. If we buy permits, essentially, at our utilities, that goes right into the bills of the utility customers and an awful lot of people in Iowa, in Oregon, and Utah, and places where we are, very poor people are going to pay a lot more money for electricity ..." (Warren Buffett's Live Lunch Interview on CNBC,
CNBC's Power Lunch, 6/24/09)

Rep. Parker Griffith (D-AL) Knows National Energy Tax Will Hurt Energy Providers, Constituents."This legislation would cripple Alabama utilities with high and swift taxes, forcing them to choose between going out of business or passing the cost onto Tennessee Valley consumers." (Rep. Parker Griffith, "Griffith Votes No On Energy Bill,"
Press Release, 6/26/09)

HOW HARD WILL AMERICANS BE HIT BY NATIONAL ENERGY TAX?

"Cap-And-Trade" Would Cost Each American Household $899 Next Year Alone. (Douglas Elmendorf, "More on the Estimated Costs to Households of a Cap-and-Trade Program,"
Congressional Budget Office's "Director's Blog," Blog, 6/25/09; U.S. Census Bureau, Current Population Survey, 2008 Annual Social and Economic Supplement)

CBO "Estimates That The Equivalent Cost Of Allowances And Offsets Would Be Roughly $105 Billion In 2010." (Douglas Elmendorf, "More On The Estimated Costs To Households Of A Cap-And-Trade Program," Congressional Budget Office's "Director's Blog," Blog, 6/25/09)

U.S. Census Bureau Estimates There Will Be 116,783,000 U.S. Households In 2010. (U.S. Census Bureau, Current Population Survey, 2008 Annual Social and Economic Supplement)

Brookings Institution Says "Cap-And-Trade" Will Cause Job Losses. "A report issued by the left-leaning research organization said that if Congress passes something similar to President Obama's or the House's proposed plan, the economy would take the biggest hit around 2025. ... the net job loss would be 0.5 percent over the first 10 years that the legislation is in effect." (Amanda DeBard, "Study: Cap And Trade Would Hurt Economy,"
The Washington Ti mes, 6/9/09)

National Black Chamber of Commerce Finds National Energy Tax Will Harm Economy, Cause Unemployment And Reduce Wages. "[C]ap-and-trade system outlined in bill would: reduce national GDP roughly $350 billon below the baseline level; cut net employment by 2.5 million jobs (even after accounting for new 'green' jobs), reduce earnings for the average U.S. worker by $390 per year." ("NBCC Study Finds Waxman-Markey Reduces GDP by $350 Billion: New study finds Waxman-Markey could cost 2.5 million U.S. jobs by 2030 and reduce earnings,"

SOTOMAYOR REVERSED: SUPREME COURT RULES ON FIREFIGHTER'S DISCRIMINATION CASE

Another Con By HJS

HJS Comments: The articlde is from the pages of Freedom's Phoenix.

In what may be the final presidential campaign--I cannot imagine what our future is-- the divine candidate from--where was that again?--continued to press for "Change you can believe in." I doubt very seriously this atrocious double-cross was anywhere in the minds of even the most uplifted of his devout congregation. It is no secret that the political party--or should I say denomination?--had been moving away from American values for decades. Any representative from either party who votes for this concept of One World Government cannot possibly represent the American people. However, one must remember that the party only represents itself anyway; they simply know how to con useful idiots.

Obama Begins Turnover of USA Sovereignty to International Body
By Sher Zieve Friday, April 3, 2009

Moving as quickly as he can to gut the USA and then divide its body parts amongst like-minded globalists, the USA’s Supreme Leader Barack Hussein Obama used the G-20 conference to begin his turnover of USA sovereignty to said internationalists and start the move toward a one-world government. Obama has signed off on international legislation—the Financial Stability Board—that would regulate ALL firms, including those within the USA and places them under the responsibility of an international governmental agency.

On FNC’s Greta Van Susteren’s program, author and columnist Dick Morris noted “literally from April 2nd of this year, that is, today, it’s a whole new world of financial regulation in which, essentially, ALL of the U.S. regulatory bodies and ALL U.S. companies are put under international regulation, international supervision. It really amounts to a global economic government.”

Called the Financial Stability Board (FSB), the pending international body’s legislation—which will of course override the US Constitution—states: “We agree to a framework of internationally agreed upon high standards. We will set up a financial stability board with a strengthened mandate to extend regulation and oversight to all systemically important financial institutions, instruments and markets”—including hedge funds, all—anything that they decide is important to the system—to endorse and implement tough new principles on paying (ph) compensation and to support sustainable compensation schemes and the corporate social responsibility of ALL firms.” The international community will now be able to determine the salaries and compensation of us all.

During this same conference, Obama officially announced the reduction in US nuclear weaponry, so that Iran will be more amenable to sitting down to talk with the US. In other words, he’s again announced to the world that the USA is no longer a threat to anyone—let alone terrorists. Never before in our soon to be short-lived history has the United States of America had this sort of a leader who has now announced—in no uncertain terms—that it is his plan and duty to dismantle and destroy the country he represents.

He, his administration members and his Congress (with extraordinary assistance from most notably Barney
Frank and Christopher Dodd and their friends) have devastated the US economy, are in the process of eliminating the First and Second Amendments—and the entire US Constitution—have ended free enterprise, established his national youth indoctrination—if not police—force (via the GIVE—Generations Invigorating
Volunteerism and Education—Act) and have begun the process of taking over virtually all private companies.

In not yet 100 days, Obama and Company have almost destroyed this country. Under this constant and increasing onslaught and devastation from within—by our “leaders”—can the USA stand much longer? Seriously, can it?

Obama speech inspires mass Quran distribution
CAIR plans to give 'holy texts' to 100,000 local, state leaders
Posted: June 27, 2009
By Drew Zahn
WorldNetDaily

The Council on American-Islamic Relations intends to launch a nationwide campaign to distribute copies of the Islamic Quran to 100,000 local, state and national leaders, a campaign the organization's public relations department claims was inspired by President Obama's speech to Muslims earlier this month.

In a statement released prior to a planned news conference next week announcing the "Share the Quran" campaign, CAIR described the scope of the outreach:

"In the multi-year initiative, American Muslims will sponsor Qurans for distribution to governors,
state attorneys general, educators, law enforcement officials, state and national legislators, local elected and public officials, media professionals and other local or national leaders who shape public opinion or determine
policy," the statement said.

According to the press release from CAIR, the "Share the Quran" educational campaign "was prompted by President Obama's recent address to Muslims worldwide in which he quoted from that holy text."

(Story continues below)

As WND reported, during his speech "to the Muslim world" from Cairo on June 4, Obama referred to the Quran as "holy" four times and quoted several verses from the Islamic text. He also used Muslim terminology, such as the Quranic obligation of "zakat" or charity.
"As the Holy Quran tells us, 'Be conscious of God and speak always the truth,'" Obama said. "That is what I will try to do – to speak the truth as best I can, humbled by the task before us, and firm in my belief that the interests we share as human beings are far more powerful than the forces that drive us apart."

Obama was reading from chapter 9 verse 119 of the Quran, which scholars pointed out to WND carries two interpretations: the primary exegesis, or tafsir, which deals with speaking the truth, and a second, underlying tafsir urging Muslims to follow Muhammad in waging jihad against nonbelievers.

CAIR's announced intention for the Quran distribution, however, seems more in line with an old English playwright's saying, "The pen is mightier than the sword."

"Through this ground-breaking outreach initiative," said Larry Shaw, CAIR's board chairman and a Democrat state senator from North Carolina, "we hope not only to educate policy-makers and opinion leaders about Islam, but also to provide an opportunity for American Muslims to reach out to their fellow citizens of other faiths."

The "Share the Quran" initiative, according to the CAIR statement, is part of the celebration of the council's 15th anniversary.

CAIR was founded in 1994 and bills itself as the nation's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization.

HOW TO STAND UP TO IRAN By DICK MORRIS & EILEEN MCGANN

Published on DickMorris.com on June 26, 2009

In our new book, Catastrophe, we spell out clearly how Obama has disarmed us in the war on terror and excoriate him for giving Hamas almost $1 billion in foreign aid funneled through the United Nations relief agency in Gaza that takes orders from Hamas. But now, the Administration's weakness in supporting human rights in Iran writes a sad chapter in the history of our foreign policy.

For her part, Hillary Clinton is really playing hardball with Iran! Faced with its outrageous conduct in killing its own citizens to cow them into silence, she has disinvited Iranian diplomats from the hot dog festival commemorating July 4th. That'll show 'em.

But, in Catastrophe, we propose stronger action. One specific step that could send just the right message to Iran is to cut back its gasoline supplies. Despite having the world's second largest reserves of oil, Iran must import 40% of its gasoline because of a lack of refining capacity. Most of its refined gasoline comes from the Jamnagar Refinery, operated and owned by Reliance Industries, an Indian company. And guess who has guaranteed a $500 million loan to expand this refinery? You did.

The American taxpayer, through the Export-Import Bank provided the loan guarantees as part of a $900 million package to Reliance.

We urge Congress to pass the Sherman-Kirk Amendment, which just cleared a House Appropriation s Subcommittee with bi-partisan support. The amendment, co-sponsored by Democratic Congressman Brad Sherman of California and Republican Mark Kirk of Illinois, would cutoff Export-Import bank financing for any firm that exports gasoline to Iran or helps it to develop new refining capacity.

Orde Kittre, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies calls Iran's dependence on imported gasoline its "Achilles' Heel." So let's learn a lesson from OPEC and turn the tables, cutting gasoline imports to Iran.

Apart from the obvious question of why the United States taxpayer is helping to finance the refinement of Iran's gasoline, the Sherman-Kirk Amendment offers the timid Obama Administration the perfect way to show the anger and outrage it claims to feel at the suppression of democratic dissent in Iran. It might even be more effective than the denial of Fourth of July hot dogs.

This bipartisan bill strikes at the very core of Iran's economy and sends a potent signal of America's support for human rights and opposition to totalitarian autocracy.

President Obama has unilaterally repealed the emphasis on human rights that was President Jimmy Carter's major positive foreign policy accomplishment. He has replaced it with a value-neutral policy that appeases the forces of dictatorship and cowers in their wake.

The swift adoption of the Sherman-Kirk Amendment would give Obama a real weapon to discipline Iran and to pressure it to reach an accommodation with its own people.

As speculators take their cue from Congress and bet on higher gasoline prices in Iran, the cost of gasoline would rise and catalyze further discontent with the regime. Iran subsidizes its gasoline prices, holding them to approximately 35 cents per gallon.

With a falloff in refined capacity, the government would have to jump through hoops to avoid massive inflation in gasoline prices. Rationing would ensue. Through economic, as opposed to military pressure, Obama will be sending a signal to Iran of how seriously we take human rights in the United States and how little Iran can afford to isolate itself from the global community.

The Sherman-Kirk Amendment is no off the wall idea. It has already been passed by a House Appropriations Subcommittee and, with Administration support, could easily become law.

Now is Obama's chance to offer more than words to counter Iranian repression. We hope he will seize it.

Obamas Health Care Plan Will Hurt You

By Floyd and Mary Beth Brown, Expose Obama

Imagine waiting for a year to have cancer surgery while the malignancy spreads--and then be told, "Sorry. You waited too long. Go home and die." It happens in Britain and Canada because they have socialized medicine.

Now imagine a federal bureaucrat possessing the power to choose your doctor, tell doctors what treatments they can prescribe and which tests they can run. They decide at what age you are no longer eligible to undergo dialysis or receive an organ transplant or a CAT scan, even treatments as simple as antibiotics. Are you ready for a law that forbids you from consulting a private physician for better treatment or to get a second opinion -- even if you're willing to pay for the service yourself?

These are all features of President Obama's health care plan which he recently announced, saying: "After decades of inaction, we have finally decided to fix what is broken about health care in America. We have decided that it's time to give every American quality health care at an affordable cost."

Obama is using the excuse that millions of Americans are uninsured to take over America's health care system -- and he will destroy it. The health care "crisis" is a myth. Medical costs are high, but this is a result of the best care in the world. There's no health-care crisis in America.

Improvements can be made, but according to Investor's Business Daily the crisis is exaggerated: "According to 'Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States,' a Census Bureau report published last August, of the 45.6 million persons in the U.S. that did not have health insurance at some point in 2007, 9.7 million, or about 21 percent, were not U.S. citizens. Also among the uninsured are 17 million Americans who live in households where the annual income exceeds $50,000; 7 million of those without coverage have incomes of $75,000 a year or more."

MINI-ME STRIKES AGAIN!

Below is a letter we received from LD-6 Chairman DAVE BRASWELL that he sent to all District 6 PC's concerning an e-mail sent out by ethically challenged MARK 'MINI-ME' ZEMEL criticizing the last LD-6 meeting and its' speakers. Zemel, who is running CHRIS SIMCOX's campaign for Senate (maybe Zemel knows where all that Minuteman $$$ went?).

Zemel has spent the past 3 years harassing not only Chairman Braswell, but officials of the Arizona Republican Party with his rants. This CLOWN is what is wrong with our party!

Dear LD 6 Precinct Committeemen:

A few days ago I received a copy of an email (see below) sent to the Executive Director of the Maricopa County Republican Party stating that I was, and I summarize,” “unethical, despicable and lying” by inviting Senate Candidate Chris Simcox to be our special guest speaker at the LD 6 June 22nd meeting and then without advance knowledge, have him participate in a debate.

These are very strong words coming from this individual and mature restraint on my part is in order. I am not accustomed to accusations challenging my integrity. The fact of the matter is that I did initially invite just Mr. Simcox as our sole guest speaker. Moreover, when talking with a Mr. Simcox representative prior to the June 1 format change to honor our Kerry Martin, I informed him at that time I was going to invite a representative from the McCain camp to also speak at the June 22 meeting that Mr. Simcox was originally asked to speak as the sole guest speaker. My intention was to be fair. The Simcox representative acknowledged this change and nothing more was discussed regarding this topic. No debate format was ever discussed nor did I ever consider having a debate format.

Since I and the First Vice Chair were not in attendance at the meeting last Monday, the Second Vice Chair(Bob Haran) facilitated the meeting. Unbeknown to me he also invited a third Senate Candidate and changed the format to a debate. I was remiss by not inviting the third candidate but I had not talked to his representatives in advance. Inviting a third guest is the Second Vice Chairs prerogative as an elected officer in charge of the meeting. I personally would not have changed the format but as I have said, that is his prerogative. It is also important to note that the candidates are in full control of their schedule. Once the change was effected at the meeting any one of them or their representatives could have simply refused to participate. To date I have not received any complaints from any of the candidates in attendance or their representatives.

Now that the facts are straight, I would like to state that comments like these coming from this LD 6 member toward me are intended to illicit a negative response from others. For some this type of communication succeeds in accomplishing a goal of political manipulation as a necessary part of how things should be accomplished. By having you read such comments without knowing all the facts we become “complicit enablers jumping on every perceived scandal and conflict stirring the pot of controversy to attract supporters for the cause of others.” I am certain this will continue from some after I distribute this response.

As former Bush Press Secretary, Scott McClellan writes in his book, “What Happened’. “When interparty warfare breaks out as is intended, the results are terribly destructive and do lasting damage to our political discourse. Vicious, negative attacks, distortions, spin, unsubstantiated innuendo, and misinformation become the norm. These types of sound bites receive the greatest emphasis and are too often grounded in such unpleasantness. Caveats are deemphasized. Contradictory information is downplayed, dismissed, or simply disregarded. Issues are too often oversimplified in the context of winners and losers, and portrayed in stark black-and-white terms. The side that most effectively manipulates the narrative often prevails, and is lifted up as being on the offensive—regardless of any nuances and the larger underlying truth. Deception nudges truth to the side.”

I believe most of those “engaging in the deceptive ways are good people who have fallen prey to the destructive nature of the political game”. “But as manipulation is embraced more widely and becomes more accepted, a new culture starts to develop as a result of the all-out interparty warfare which creates a culture of deception.” In this case, at the expense of my integrity as your Chairman.

I fully understand that people and groups will always differ about the proper intentions of their leadership, be they elected or appointed. “But should their response to these differences be a process of constant manipulation of opinion rather than one centered as much as possible on rational debate, deliberation, and compromise? Should it be based on deception, or grounded in a high level of openness, forthrightness, honesty, and a search for truth?” A call to me asking for the facts prior to making such accusations would have met a greater goal for the whole group as opposed to the needs of a single individual. “All too often, in today’s politics, the spirit of warfare rules.” I will not participate as your Chairman.

The agenda that was presented before and during the meeting is the only one that I personally approved after having discussed the issue with members of both the Simcox and McCain camps. I did not suggest nor did I approve a debate! Regardless, the comments directed about my integrity do nothing to help us accomplish our common goals as precinct committeemen. Should any of you have questions regarding this or other issues my door is always open. I will take time to address those concerns with you in the spirit of openness for the good of our Party.

I am very proud of all that each of you does positively on behalf of the Republican Party!

David Braswell, Chairman
LD 6

To: Maricopa County Republican Committee
Tom Husband, Executive Director

Re: LD-6 Surprise Debate

Dear Mr. Husband,

I wanted you to be aware of improper campaign activities at the 6/22 Legislative District 6 meeting.

Last May 18th LD-6 Chairman, David Braswell invited Chris Simcox as special guest speaker to the June 22nd LD-6 meeting. Chris accepted this invitation. There was never another word on the subject between LD-6 and the Simcox campaign. On Sunday June 21, as I am a PC in (coincidentally) LD-6, I received the attached LD-6 6/24 meeting agenda. The agenda had a surprise for anyone interested in the Simcox campaign. Chris is still listed as a Special Guest Speaker but, Michael Broomhead representing John McCain is listed as another “Special Guest Speaker” at the 6/22 meeting.

Chris arrived at the 6/22 LD-6 meeting to find a surprise candidate’s debate had been set up under the disguise of inviting Chris Simcox as a “Special Guest Speaker.” Michael Broomhead was nowhere to be found. The surprise debate included Chris Simcox, Jim Deakin and Paul Charlton representing John McCain.

I wanted you to be aware of the unethical practices being employed by David Braswell as LD-6 Chairman. When you talk to other candidates planning a visit to LD-6 they should be made aware that arrangements promised by Chairman Braswell are untrustworthy. This despicable practice reflects poorly on our whole district and frankly, on our Party.

Fortunately, Mr. Simcox doesn’t require advance notice to tell both the truth and his winning story of service for our country. By all accounts, Chris “won over the room” last night. Still though, I’m sure you do not condone lying invitations as “Guest Speaker” to LD Meetings.

From David Braswell’s May 18th invitation to Chris Simcox campaign
“…Moreover, this is official confirmation that I have scheduledChris to speak at the June 22nd LD 6 meeting to be held at thesame location and time as the meeting guest speaker. As such,Chris will be provided up to 20 minutes to speak to the LD 6members and another 15 minutes for questions.” Original complete email from David Braswell available upon request.

Attached: Official LD-6 pre-meeting agenda listing Chris Simcox and Michael Broomhead as “Special Guest Speakers.”

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
Mark Zemel

Shadegg: Republicans Denied Opportunity to Ask Health Care Questions

Shadegg: “Once again, Congressional Democrats are playing a dangerous game, denying a dozen Republicans the opportunity to ask questions of the Secretary regarding the single biggest piece of legislation put forth in my 15 years in Congress...”

Washington, June 25 -

Today, Congressman John Shadegg (AZ-3) released the following statement after twelve Republican Members of Congress were denied the opportunity to ask questions of Health and Human Services Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius:

“Yesterday, the Energy and Commerce Committee met to hear from important voices in the universal health care debate, chief among them Health and Human Services Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius. What ensued was troubling, to say the least.

“Once again, Congressional Democrats are playing a dangerous game, denying a dozen Republicans the opportunity to ask questions of the Secretary regarding the single biggest piece of legislation put forth in my 15 years in Congress—not that the Secretary could have answered. She admitted that she did not help draft nor had she read the bill.

“Thus, Republicans requested repeatedly that the Secretary be invited back at her convenience to answer questions after she has a chance to read the bill. Their requests were denied.

“House Democrats owe their colleagues and the American people more than a cursory meeting with a Cabinet official. We all deserve informed answers before spending trillions of our taxpayer dollars to effectively force more than 100 million Americans off their current health care plan and cause patients to pay more for less.

“There’s no question about it: preventing a thorough and open hearing is foul play. And when the health of the entire nation hangs in the balance, there is no more important time to question the potentially devastating effects of government-run health care.”

Cong. JEFF FLAKE: There are Better Alternatives to Government-Run Health Care

On Monday I sent you a short message on the battle over health care policy in Washington. At the bottom of the message, I encouraged you to read a piece from Kimberly Strassel of the Wall Street Journal. If you have not read it, I would encourage you to do so by clicking here . She does a great job reporting on what Safeway, a national grocery store chain, is doing to tackle the rise in health care costs, while also providing access, quality care, and rewards for prevention.

Recently, I came across a clip of the Mike Huckabee Show on Fox News. Governor Huckabee had as his guest Steve Burd, the CEO of Safeway. It's a relatively short video, about seven minutes in length. I hope you'll take a moment to watch it ( click here ), as it shows what a company and its employees can do - together - when everyone involved recognizes that the best way to fix the health care crisis is to give individuals an active stake in their health care decisions.

Also, on another positive note, the Arizona state legislature referred to the ballot a state constitutional amendment called the Health Care Freedom Act. The amendment, if approved by voters, would guarantee the right of Arizonans to make their own health care decisions free from coercion (direct or indirect) to participate in any health care plan.

I have received many insightful responses to the last message I sent on health care, and I always appreciate hearing your thoughts and ideas. Please keep sending them as I do very much enjoying hearing from you.

As always, thank you for your continued support.

The Cap and Tax Fiction By The Wall Street Journal

Thursday, 25 June 2009

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has put cap-and-trade legislation on a forced march through the House, and the bill may get a full vote as early as Friday. It looks as if the Democrats will have to destroy the discipline of economics to get it done.

Despite House Energy and Commerce Chairman Henry Waxman's many payoffs to Members, rural and Blue Dog Democrats remain wary of voting for a bill that will impose crushing costs on their home-district businesses and consumers. The leadership's solution to this problem is to simply claim the bill defies the laws of economics.

Their gambit got a boost this week, when the Congressional Budget Office did an analysis of what has come to be known as the Waxman-Markey bill. According to the CBO, the climate legislation would cost the average household only $175 a year by 2020. Edward Markey, Mr. Waxman's co-author, instantly set to crowing that the cost of upending the entire energy economy would be no more than a postage stamp a day for the average household. Amazing. A closer look at the CBO analysis finds that it contains so many caveats as to render it useless.

For starters, the CBO estimate is a one-year snapshot of taxes that will extend to infinity. Under a cap-and-trade system, government sets a cap on the total amount of carbon that can be emitted nationally; companies then buy or sell permits to emit CO2. The cap gets cranked down over time to reduce total carbon emissions.

To get support for his bill, Mr. Waxman was forced to water down the cap in early years to please rural Democrats, and then severely ratchet it up in later years to please liberal Democrats. The CBO's analysis looks solely at the year 2020, before most of the tough restrictions kick in. As the cap is tightened and companies are stripped of initial opportunities to "offset" their emissions, the price of permits will skyrocket beyond the CBO estimate of $28 per ton of carbon. The corporate costs of buying these expensive permits will be passed to consumers.

The biggest doozy in the CBO analysis was its extraordinary decision to look only at the day-to-day costs of operating a trading program, rather than the wider consequences energy restriction would have on the economy. The CBO acknowledges this in a footnote: "The resource cost does not indicate the potential decrease in gross domestic product (GDP) that could result from the cap."

The hit to GDP is the real threat in this bill. The whole point of cap and trade is to hike the price of electricity and gas so that Americans will use less. These higher prices will show up not just in electricity bills or at the gas station but in every manufactured good, from food to cars. Consumers will cut back on spending, which in turn will cut back on production, which results in fewer jobs created or higher unemployment. Some companies will instead move their operations overseas, with the same result.

When the Heritage Foundation did its analysis of Waxman-Markey, it broadly compared the economy with and without the carbon tax. Under this more comprehensive scenario, it found Waxman-Markey would cost the economy $161 billion in 2020, which is $1,870 for a family of four. As the bill's restrictions kick in, that number rises to $6,800 for a family of four by 2035.

Note also that the CBO analysis is an average for the country as a whole. It doesn't take into account the fact that certain regions and populations will be more severely hit than others -- manufacturing states more than service states; coal producing states more than states that rely on hydro or natural gas. Low-income Americans, who devote more of their disposable income to energy, have more to lose than high-income families.

Even as Democrats have promised that this cap-and-trade legislation won't pinch wallets, behind the scenes they've acknowledged the energy price tsunami that is coming. During the brief few days in which the bill was debated in the House Energy Committee, Republicans offered three amendments: one to suspend the program if gas hit $5 a gallon; one to suspend the program if electricity prices rose 10% over 2009; and one to suspend the program if unemployment rates hit 15%. Democrats defeated all of them.

The reality is that cost estimates for climate legislation are as unreliable as the models predicting climate change. What comes out of the computer is a function of what politicians type in. A better indicator might be what other countries are already experiencing. Britain's Taxpayer Alliance estimates the average family there is paying nearly $1,300 a year in green taxes for carbon-cutting programs in effect only a few years.

Americans should know that those Members who vote for this climate bill are voting for what is likely to be the biggest tax in American history. Even Democrats can't repeal that reality.

OBAMA'S WEAKNESS ISSUE BY DICK MORRIS

Published on TheHill.com on June 23, 2009

Printer-Friendly Version

If only President Obama were a third as tough on Iran and North Korea as he is on Republicans, he'd be making progress in containing the dire threats to our national security these rogue nations represent.

As it is, the president is letting the perception of weakness cloud his image. Once that particular miasma enshrouds a presidency, it is hard to dissipate.

If foreign policy issues actually involve war and the commitment of troops, they can be politically potent. But otherwise, the impact of international affairs on presidential image is largely metaphoric. Since foreign policy is the only area in which the president can govern virtually alone, it provides a window on his personality and use of power that domestic policy cannot.

When President Clinton, for example, dithered as Bosnia burned, he acquired a reputation for weakness that dragged down his ratings. It was only after he moved decisively to bomb and then disarm the Serbs that he shed that image. It took President George H.W. Bush's invasion of Iraq to set to rest concerns that he was a "wimp." Jimmy Carter never recovered from the lasting damage to his reputation that his inability to stand up to Iran during the hostage crisis precipitated.

So now, as North Korea defies international sanctions and sends arms to Myanmar and Iran slaughters its citizens in the streets, President Obama looks helpless and hapless. He comes
across as not having a clue how to handle the crises.

And as North Korea prepares to launch a missile on a Hail Mary pass aimed at Hawaii, the Democrats slash 19 missile interceptors from the Defense Department budget.

The transparent appeasement of Iran's government -- and its obvious lack of reciprocation -- makes Obama look ridiculous. Long after the mullahs have suppressed what limited democracy they once allowed, Obama's image problems will persist.

While Americans generally applaud Obama's outreach to the Muslims of the world and think highly of his Cairo speech, they are very dissatisfied with his inadequate efforts to stop Iran from developing -- and North Korea from using -- nuclear weapons. Clearly, his policies toward these two nations are a weak spot in his reputation.

His failure to stand up to either aggressor is of a piece with his virtual surrender in the war on terror.

Documented in our new book, Catastrophe, we show how he has disarmed the United States and simply elected to stop battling terrorists, freeing them from Guantánamo as he empowers them with every manner of constitutional protection.Obviously, the Iranian democracy demonstrators will not fare any better than their Chinese brethren did in Tiananmen Square. But the damage their brutal suppression will do to the Iranian government is going to be huge.

The ayatollahs of Tehran have always sold themselves to the world's Islamic faithful as the ultimate theocracy, marrying traditional Muslim values with the needs of modern governance. But now, in the wake of the bloodshed, they are revealed as nothing more than military dictators. All the romance is gone, just as it faded in wake of the tanks in Budapest and Prague. All that remains is power.

China, of course, fared better after Tiananmen because of its economic miracle. But Iran has no such future on its horizon. The loss of prestige in the Arab world and the end of the pretense of government with popular support will cost Iran dearly.

In the meantime, Obama's pathetic performance vis-à-vis Iran and North Korea cannot but send a message to all of America's enemies that the president of the United States does not believe in using power -- that he is a wimp and they can get away with whatever they want. A dangerous reputation indeed.

Cap and Trade: The Government's New Pet Market By Justin Williams

06/25/2009

While most Americans are distracted by the situation in Iran and the vital current health care debates, Barack Obama and his friends in Congress are attempting to rush through one of the most draconian realignments of energy policy in the nation’s history. This legislation proposes a cap on carbon emissions with permits that are tradable between companies. Known as “cap and trade,” it’s better described as “cap and tax.”

The decision by Congress to go with a “cap and trade” system over a more straightforward carbon tax, attempts to delude the American people into thinking that this is a “market-based approach.” When really it is an aristocratic-based approach.

Cap and trade would allow the industries that produce pollution to have a government-granted cartel over their respective industries. Just like other infamous cartels, including OPEC on oil and the AMA on doctors, this is bad news for the American people since it all drastically increases the cost of energy. This means that new companies that want to enter the market will have to buy credits that have already been auctioned off.

Each of these cartels creates high barriers to entry for new competitors. For example, “if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted,” as Obama stated on the campaign trail.

Even though it will be hard for a new company to set up shop in the energy industry, after this, the profits from this exclusive cartel will be given to Congress and not to the companies to reinvest into possible innovative efficiencies. This will only add more money to the congressional budget that will undoubtedly be handed out to special interests, undoubtedly in the form of ever-burgeoning “entitlements.”

For the average American, that means higher prices on energy, higher unemployment due to increased costs upon these companies, and even reduced economic output for the whole country causing a decrease in the average American’s income.

One Tax Foundation study found that cap and trade would eliminate at least 965,000 jobs, cause a $37.8 billion decrease in household earnings, and a decrease of $136.8 billion decrease in economic output. Proving that this policy is wrong for America and anti-market in nature. As Economist Robert Murphy said, “The number of permits is an arbitrary scarcity imposed by government fiat.”

Making it obvious, cap and trade is not a real market based solution—but, rather, a market-biased problem.

In markets there exists a division of labor of information, for example one person knows how to put together a car, another to drive the car through taxi routes, and another to fix the car. Because of specialized information, the energy companies know what’s better for their respective industries than the government bureaucrats. That is why when Los Angeles tried their own local version of cap and trade they wound up issuing more permits than there was pollution. This effectively did nothing and the city had to wait for five years before the pollution would reach the cap level. When it finally hit the cap, the prices exploded.

Because of the complexity of any and all industries in America’s economy, it is impossible for the Obama administration to attempt to centrally plan the nation’s energy sector. As Austrian Economist F.A. Hayek once said, it is impossible for one individual “to secure the best use of resources known to any of the members of society, for ends whose relative importance only these individuals know.”

While these bumbling bureaucrats play around with one of the most important sectors of the economy, the prices will continue to rise upon individual consumers. As anytime the government imposes a higher cost upon a business, the costs trickle down into higher prices. The American people will be forced to spend more of their hard-earned income on energy and less on other items even more basic to the “Hierarchy of Needs.”

Not to mention that the poor on average already spend more of a percentage of their income on energy, causing the effect of these new costs on them to be the highest.

Central planning was wrong for the Soviet Union. In fact, it is wrong for America. Unfortunately, some—at the very highest levels of political power—seem unable to learn the lessons of history. Hence, we will all be forced to repeat its mistake.
