AZ REPUBLICAN CONGRESSIONAL UPDATE for Monday November 8, 2010

Ben Quayle’s Winning Campaign Strategy

Written by Noah Rothman on November 3, 2010, 2:57 PM

There will be many campaign strategies and tactics to review over the coming weeks. Tuesday night’s elections resulted in the validation or repudiation of many interesting campaign tactics. One GOP candidate’s win was far from a foregone conclusion. Ben Quayle’s victorious candidacy for Arizona’s 3rd congressional seat deserves immediate scrutiny.

The son of famous former Vice President, Dan Quayle, Ben Quayle never encountered the problem that most challenger’s face when running for House seat, low name recognition. That, of course, has the potential to work against you – high name recognition means surrendering self-definition, at least initially, to forces beyond a candidate’s control.

Running for the seat vacated by retiring Republican Rep. John Shadegg, Quayle sought to pick up a seat held by one of two Republicans since 1983. This ad was aimed at Arizona 3rds primary electorate. This primary field being packed and with the federal government’s prosecution of a law suit against Arizona over its tough anti-illegal immigration law, there was no shortage of attacks on the White House among Arizona’s Republican candidates.

Going after the unpopular President was not a difficult call to make, but he had to do it with finesse. Arizona’s 3rd is a nuanced district and outright bomb throwing in the primary against Democrats is likely to backfire in a general election. Appearing to be the consummate conservative firebrand is not necessarily a path to victory in Arizona. It is a recent development that The Grand Canyon State has become unfriendly to the Democratic party and it has more to do with recent developments on the immigration front. A politically expedient tactic today, it may not be as relevant in the next election cycle. Then the process of personal redefinition would begin again.

Quayle needed to do two things: 1) set himself apart from his famous father and set his own reputation and 2) define himself apart from his primary contenders. The way he set out to fulfill the second condition led some observers to determine that Quayle was pursuing a strategy in the primary that may succeed but doom him in the general election. He aired a now famous commercial in which a tough-talking Quayle calls Barack Obama “the worst president in history,” and that someone needs to go to Washington to “knock the hell out of the place.” Quayle won, but now he had to face a Democrat more than prepared to run against Quayle’s rhetorical overreach.

The Democrat in that race, John Hulburd, attacked Quayle as being more suited to life in a frat house than the U.S. House. A revelation that Quayle’s early-career affiliation with a racy gossip website forced him to apologize for the content in a number of posts, but that issue came and went and did not appear to have a lasting impact on his candidacy. Quale handled it well. Hulburd then challenged Quayle’s contention that Washington is bloated and he was just the kind of outsider that could fix it – his father after all was as inside as it gets. This, too, did not have sticking power. It turned out that 2010 was on Quayle’s side, and his characterization of President Obama as “the worst president in history” was not so far outside the realm of acceptable thought that Hulburd wanted to run against it.

The infamous “Worst President” ad aired over the summer and a Public Policy Polling survey of that district from October 18 showed Quayle slipping with 44 to Hulburd’s 46 percent. He was named one of the liberal Salon.com’s “terrifying ten.” Having made himself a target of the left, he took the risk of alienating himself with moderate voters. Quayle was sure that he could get the voters he lost back in new and reenergized conservative voters. In Arizona in 2010, that worked. In any other year it might not have; Anna Little employed a similar strategy in New Jersey’s 6th district and came up short on Election Day.

Again, there will be many post-mortems and this is just one. Quayle is an interesting upcoming figure and it will be fascinating to watch his career develop in the next Congress.

Congressman Franks Strongly Urges President Obama to Confront Indian Government over Ongoing Policy of Visa Denial

November 6, 2010 – Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) gave the following statement today as President Obama begins his ten-day trip through Asia beginning with a visit for several days in India. Just last week, the Indian Embassy refused to grant visas to a member of Congressman Franks' staff as well as to another sitting Member of Congress, who were told that their visas had been placed on "indefinite hold." The Congressional delegation had sought entry to the country for the purpose of attending a ceremony commemorating the work of an organization dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating drug addicts, AIDS-infected orphans, and victims of sex trafficking.

"In recent weeks and months, the Indian Embassy and government have increasingly implemented a policy of denying visas to groups and government delegations, including a fellow Member of Congress and a member of my staff, who have sought to travel to the country for the purpose of advocating for human rights, particularly for the victims of the grotesque epidemic of sex trafficking. As a valued ally and a growing partner in trade, it is distressing that the Indian Embassy and government would openly thwart U.S. groups’ attempts to travel to the country to work together in addressing a growing problem and a common threat to the shared values of our two nations— sex trafficking as well as other fundamental human rights violations."

The recent denial is not the first instance of the Indian government denying entry to government delegations or human rights advocacy organizations. In June of 2009, the U.S. Commission on International Freedom was denied visas for its proposed visit to assess India's human rights situation and it was not offered alternative travel dates. Another private human rights advocacy organization was later also denied entry. Additionally, on November 1st, 2010, Professor Richard Shapiro, Chair and Associate Professor of the Department of Anthropology at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco, was denied entry indefinitely by the Immigration Authorities in New Delhi. Professor Shapiro's wife, Angana Chatterji, who is the Co-convener of the International People's Tribunal on Human Rights and Justice in Indian-administered Kashmir (IPTK) and also Professor of Anthropology at CIIS, has reportedly experienced repeated harassment in India for her work on human rights.

Taken collectively, these incidents show a concerning and growing disdain on the part of the Indian government for working with its key allies to protect the fundamental rights of its citizens and to address the growing problem of sex trafficking and other human rights violations within India’s borders.
"These actions on behalf of the government of India call into question the sincerity of its commitment to eliminating the scourge of human trafficking and its willingness to have its human rights conditions assessed." Franks stated. "It also makes India's call for the U.S. government to extend more visas to Indian citizens ironic in light of its own repeated denials to American citizens, U.S. government organizations, and Members of the United States Congress."

"Furthermore, should President Obama fail to address this critical issue during his extended stay in India while prioritizing issues relating to our international trade policies with India, he will fail his responsibility as President to speak forcefully in defense of human rights and forfeit a prime opportunity with a key ally to reaffirm the United States' unwavering commitment to the dignity of every human person.

"President Obama has himself stated that 'If we aren’t willing to pay a price for our values, then we should ask ourselves whether we truly believe in them at all.' I strongly urge the President to live up to his own words and address the issue of these visa denials during his meetings with Indian state officials."

Congressman Franks is serving his fourth term in the U.S. House of Representatives, and is a member of the Committee on Armed Services, Strategic Forces Subcommittee, Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee, Military Readiness Subcommittee, Committee on the Judiciary, Constitution Subcommittee, and is Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law.

AZ REPUBLICAN CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATES UPDATE for Saturday Sept 25, 2010

Franks Says President Obama Ignoring China’s One-Child Policy

September 24, 2010 – Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) today released the following statement in response to President Obama's meeting yesterday with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and in light of tomorrow's significance as the 30th anniversary of China's notorious one-child policy:

"As tomorrow marks the 30th anniversary of China's brutal, oppressive, inhumane 'one-child' policy, one would hope that President Obama would have taken advantage of his face-to-face meeting yesterday with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao to express absolute opposition to a policy that results in millions of coerced abortions ever year. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the conversation bore no mention of China's unspeakable human rights violations.

"For someone who says he cares about 'women's rights,' as President Obama so often claims when promoting abortion-on-demand, Mr. Obama seems disturbingly unperturbed by the fact that, even today, pregnant Chinese women were dragged off the streets and forced to endure the murder of their child, either because the Chinese government determined they shouldn't have more than one, or because they had the 'nerve' to conceive without a government license to do so.

"Moreover, it would seem that ignoring China's overwhelming record of human rights violations is an Administration-wide policy. Just last February, while addressing China's appalling human rights record during a trip to China, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton shockingly said, '... our pressing on those issues can't interfere with the global economic crisis, the global climate change crisis, and the security crisis.' I can hardly sum up the Administration's deplorably skewed priorities better than Mrs. Clinton herself.

"Because of the traditional preference for boys in China, as many as 40 million Chinese baby girls have been murdered since the one-child policy’s institution, not to mention the millions who are simply abandoned. This ghastly trend has led to huge demographic disparities, with ratios of 160 men for every 100 women in some areas. And by creating a black market for little boys, this policy almost singlehandedly accounts for the abduction of 190 Chinese boys every single day. The incredible strain such an oppressive atmosphere places on mothers has caused the suicide rate amongst Chinese women to reach epidemic proportions, with 500 Chinese women killing themselves every day, a number unheard of in other parts of the world.

"If Barack Obama cannot find his tongue to condemn an inhumanity of this magnitude, he has lost his way as a human being."

Cuba Sees the Light, Too Bad Grijalva Hasn't

September 24th, 2010

For Immediate Release

One of the last bastions of Communism is falling. Cuban Dictator Fidel Castro recently announced that the Cuban government would be cutting 500,000 government jobs, moving towards free-market reforms, and allowing individuals to own and operate businesses. Yes, that's right, even Fidel Castro is abandoning socialist principles in favor of practical economic solutions.

Once again we see that socialism and its "centrally planned", big government economics simply does not work. Except in the minds of academic theorists and populist politicians.

In the Soviet Union, women stood in endless lines for a single loaf of bread or a pair of shoes. North Koreans live on the edge of starvation--desperately terrified of their own government. And Hugo Chavez rakes in billions for his cronies, while the people of Venezuela huddle in filth and abject poverty.

It doesn't work. So why does Raul Grijalva want to replicate their failures here at home? And if you think this is just alarmist rhetoric, ask yourself, what are the hallmarks of communist government?

A.) Government run and controlled healthcare? Obamacare. Check.

B.) Government owns major corporations? GM, Chrysler, Fannie, Freddie. Check.

C.) Government control of the financial markets? Wall Street "Reform". Check.

D.) Government controlled pension and retirement system? And it's broke. Check.

E.) Massive Bureaucracies? Don't really need to say anything here. Check.

F.) Vast numbers of unionized government employees? And they make double what they would in the private sector. Check

G.) Wealth Redistribution? Tax hikes for small business owners. Check

"Communist countries have always been big on promises and short on their deliveries. The 'Radiant Future' of Karl Marx has never been more than a mirage," said Ruth McClung.

"But some politicians--like our President and Mr. Grijalva--still believe in the fantasy. But that's all socialism is, a fantasy. They're grasping for something that doesn't exist--like a dying man in the desert, they think that dust cloud ahead is a palm grove with a pool of icy cold water in the middle."

"The only way to solve our problems and lead America back into the future is to embrace the free market, personal responsibility and self reliance."

Friends - let's keep the momentum going for Dr. Paul Gosar's campaign. Liberal Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick is attacking Paul because she does not want the voters to know she voted for Obamacare, supports tax increases, voted to raise the national debt over $1 trillion dollars and votes with Nancy Pelosi nearly 90% of the time.

Please visit www.GosarforCongress.com/contribute today to help elect Paul Gosar and together we will take back our country. Remember, if re-elected, Ann Kirkpatrick's first vote will again be to keep Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House. Paul's will be for a conservative Republican.

Thank you for your immediate help.

The Obama administration’s idea of a rogue state is Arizona.

Today we learn that the UFCW union has come to its senses and renounced the economic boycott of our state it has led while financially backing Congressman Mitchell’s campaign efforts. They have done harm to our community, and it defies good judgment… but that’s just it, Congressman Mitchell’s voting record has been a treasure trove of bad judgment!

Congressman Harry Mitchell has been bought and paid for by unions like UFCW to the tune of over half a million dollars.

Washington liberals like Congressman Mitchell have betrayed workers, seniors, taxpayers, and they’ve abandoned the Constitution. The liberal rank-and-file have picked a fight with Arizona.

Now that’s exactly what we’re going to give it to them!
Replacing Congressman Mitchell is crucial to turning this economy around and that won’t happen until union-owned Congressmen like Mitchell are defeated.

Congressman Mitchell’s allegiance to liberal labor unions has no limits. He sponsored card check legislation putting union bosses before an individual’s right to a secret ballot.
He handed the car companies over to the unions.
His record in Congress, carrying the water of unions like UFCW, has hurt our economy and cost us jobs.
Congressman Mitchell hasn’t wasted a single chance to sell our government to big labor.
Join David Schweikert TODAY and stand up for Arizona, stand up for America, and let’s defend the Constitution and fight for our economic freedom.
Your incredible support has meant that our campaign has the resources to stay competitive. But we need to keep up the pressure to be able to fund the ads that help keep us on the path to victory.
The American people want jobs, they want a real economic recovery, and they want federal policies that remove barriers to economic prosperity.
Our ad goes dark in just a few hours.

I need your help to make sure we can keep it running strong.
Congressman Harry Mitchell has been a huge part of the problem in Washington.
He voted for ObamaCare (twice!), voted for the Wall Street bailouts, and voted for the Obama-Pelosi stimulus that has lost more jobs than it has produced.

With your support, I am confident that we can have still have a strong economic recovery.

If WE THE PEOPLE are going to save our country, and turn our economy around, we need to replace politicians like Congressman Mitchell who have squandered trillions of dollars and done nothing to strengthen our economy and bring about real jobs creation.

Let’s put the Democrats' job killing record behind us and unleash the entrepreneurial genius of the American people and elect true fiscal leaders to Washington who will fight for our economic freedom.

AZ REPUBLICAN CONGRESSIONAL UPDATES for Tuesday Sept 21, 2010

The Obama ship is sinking and there aren’t enough lifeboats to save the Pelosi rubber-stamp, rank-and-file liberals like Congressman Mitchell in Arizona.

This government’s extreme liberal agenda of serial bailouts, nationalized takeovers, ObamaCare, and redistribution of everything we earn can come to an end, but supporting the right candidate is crucial.

We need to send liberal Congressman Mitchell home - - TODAY, David Schweikert needs your support. Your contribution will make the difference… We need to reach our critical goal!

In the next few minutes, by taking action and joining David’s fight, you can be sure that David has the resources to fight and win.

Time is close to running out. We can’t afford to lose.

The Obama ship is dragging the American people underwater, and Congressman Mitchell’s lock-step votes for the most extreme legislation in a century is "unconscionable"!

We need more jobs, not more government.

We will not yield in the fight for freedom. Let’s put the out-of-touch liberal machine in their place and send Congressman Mitchell back to Arizona.

Support a true fiscal expert and Constitutional warrior.

David Schweikert needs your help today.

The left wing base hasn’t even started to achieve the things they want to do to America.

They want to turn us into a socialist European state. They want to tax the air we breathe and everything we touch. They want a government so big that every permission is needed to move through your daily life. We cannot let the Pelosi liberals last through November.

We will fight for freedom, and we will not give up. That is why supporting David today is an investment that can make the difference in November.
We can win this fight in Arizona.

But we can’t win without your support.

Help David Schweikert fight the big spenders and help deliver victory, right here in the 5th district.

In the next few minutes, your support will make victory possible... Will you help us fight and win?

Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) addresses a lawsuit by the former CFO of the California branch of Planned Parenthood. Franks notes that the lawsuit indicates a level of corruption within Planned Parenthood that far surpasses even that which we saw within ACORN.According to the lawsuit, the California branch of Planned Parenthood overcharged the government by over $180 million in just one year.

Just one clinic is alleged to have overcharged by more than $5 million.Similar allegations against Planned Parenthood have also surfaced in other states, including New Jersey and Washington.

Kirkpatrick Launches Character Attacks Against Paul

I need your immediate help.

As the polls continue to show Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick trailing us by six points or more, she has decided to forgo discussing the issues and has launched a series of character attacks against me and my family.

In a recent radio ad, Kirkpatrick is not telling the truth. Perhaps this is what Ann Kirkpatrick has learned from Nancy Pelosi during her time in Washington, DC.

I knew that running for Congress would be difficult but I never thought Kirkpatrick would go to such lengths to lie about me and my family and the difficult times we have faced.

Donate Now To Help Us Tell The Truth. Here is the truth: Like many of you, Maude and I are small business owners and we understand, as you do, that times are tough. Nowhere is this more true than right here in Congressional District One. As every small business owner in America knows, sometimes you get behind but you find a way to get through the hard times.

Trust me, I have never run away from my obligations and never will. For Ann to attack a small business owner at the same time she is voting to hurt us just shows how desperate she has become. Kirkpatrick has millions of dollars at her disposal to continue the attacks on me and my family! There is an old saying in politics, “an attack unanswered, is an attack believed.” We cannot allow this to happen.

PLEASE HELP US SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT. YOUR IMMEDIATE DONATION WILL HELP US RESPOND TO THESE ATTACKS! Maude and I appreciate your immediate assistance. Paul

Reasons why President Obama is the Worst President in History

1. He has loaded up every child in this nation with more debt than any President in history.

2. With his policies and the threat of more such policy he has destroyed more wealth than any human being in history, which is always what happens when you set out to redistribute wealth: you end up destroying it.

3. He has brought us to the brink of the most massive tax increases in history and if we don't elect enough Republicans in November to stop him that is exactly what we will get.

4 . He has forced through legislation without a single republican vote that may well destroy the finest health care system in history when all we needed were some measures to control costs.

5. He has divided America along racial lines in destructive ways and he is doing so again by suing Arizona over its attempt to control the drug trade and human smuggling trade threatening its security.

6. He has failed to form a policy to adequately deal with the vicious Mexican drug cartels that are essentially running parts of that nation and becoming an increasing threat to ours.

7. He has traveled the world making apologies for America instead of defending its timeless and treasured ideals of freedom and peace for all nations of good will.

8. He has said there is nothing exceptional about America, something no other president has ever said and something which alone suggests he is a historically poor president.

9. He has hired people of strange and radical views to hold important federal posts in which they pursue more bad policy that no administration in history has ever pursued.

ICYMI: Franks Says Planned Parenthood More Corrupt Than ACORN

CLICK HERE TO SEE THE VIDEO!

In Case You Missed It: Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) appeared on Fox Business' "Money Rocks" with Eric Bolling to comment on a lawsuit alleging that Planned Parenthood has overbilled the government by hundreds of millions of dollars.

According to Victor Gonzalez, the former CFO of the California branch of Planned Parenthood, just one San Diego-area clinic overcharged the government by $5.2 million. Statewide, Gonzalez said he had witnessed more than $180 million in overcharges. Similar allegations have surfaced in numerous other states, including New Jersey and Washington.

Franks said, given that the corruption took place on such a broad level, one "would expect that the Justice Department would take a look at this," however so far no action has taken place under the Democrat-controlled Congress.

Kirkpatrick Misleads Voters Again

September 15, 2010

(Prescott, AZ): Today, the Gosar for Congress campaign set the record straight on Ann Kirkpatrick’s claim that she is independent of Nancy Pelosi, President Obama and the Democratic leadership in Washington, D.C.

“Ann Kirkpatrick has voted for Obama - Pelosi agenda time and time again including voting for President Obama’s $787 billion failed stimulus plan that gave millions to AIG executives in bonuses and voting for the Democrat’s $3.4 trillion budget that has been called
the most fiscally irresponsible budget in history. If that is how Kirkpatrick defines being an independent, we would like to hear how she defines telling the truth,” said J.P. Twist, Gosar for Congress campaign manager.

Even the Arizona Daily Sun called Ann Kirkpatrick’s ad misleading when they wrote today:

“As to her assertion of independence, the Washington Post calculates that Kirkpatrick has voted with the Democratic majority 86 percent of the time so far in her first term.” - Arizona Daily Sun, September 15, 2010

Congressmen in Glass Houses Shouldn't Throw Stones

Rep. Raul Grijalva, responding to census bureau statistics that show Arizona has the second highest poverty rate in the nation, blamed Governor Jan Brewer and the Arizona Legislature for our state's problems. Perhaps Mr. Grijalva should take a closer look in the mirror before he starts casting aspersions elsewhere. After all, Raul Grijalva's the one who called for a boycott of Arizona-at the height of the worst recession since the 1930s.

Grijalva says we need more "infrastructure investment, retirement protections, and more green energy jobs". Let's break that down.

Arizona is broke. Gov. Brewer and the State Legislature have had to make the largest budget cuts in Arizona history. Infrastructure investment right now means more debt we can't afford.

Retirement protections? The State of Arizona is not responsible for retirement planning--Social Security is not a function of the state. So who's retirement is he referring to? Not private citizens. No, he's referring to his government union friends--who already make between 30% and 50% more than their counterparts in private industry.

More green energy jobs? Mr. Grijalva is apparently unaware that green energy is still not competitive in the marketplace. Until the technology develops enough to compete on it's own, the only way to create "green energy" jobs is through massive government subsidies--more debt.

"Raul Grijalva has said this is a race about philosophies, and once again we see that's absolutely true, " said Ruth McClung.

"I believe that the only way to solve our problems, get people back to work, and better their lives is to create economic growth by supporting small businesses and embracing the free market. Raul Grijalva believes in more government, more debt, and more
irresponsible spending. Enough is enough, Congressman."

The Obama-Pelosi summer of recovery is now in the fall of reckoning...

The big government spending has failed. And now Congressmen like Harry Mitchell are trying to hide from their Obama-Pelosi spending record.

Congressman Mitchell wants you to forget about his job killing record, but…

Behind curtain number 1 is the Wall Street bailout. Mitchell spent our tax dollars and leveraged our children’s future to bail out fat cats.

David Schweikert opposed the Wall Street bailout and will never apologize for defending the free enterprise system. Our country is headed in the wrong direction and we need a true fiscal leader like David fighting for our economic freedom.

Let’s send Congressman Mitchell and his bailout voting record packing for good!

Behind curtain number 2 is the failed stimulus "plan". Obama and Pelosi corralled puppet Congressmen like Mitchell into the most staggering abuse of the American taxpayer in history. The spending puts the failed New Deal to shame, and it was purely a political pork operation.

The stimulus was a doomed policy from the beginning. How many billions have we spent on Obama's road signs and union cronies, all allowed under Congressman Mitchell’s supposed “watch.”

Click here to send the message that on November 2 we change course. It is unacceptable for a government to tax-and-spend, borrow-and-spend, and leverage our sovereignty in generational tyranny. We want true leadership that fights for an economy that creates real jobs, not more bureaucrats.

And finally, behind curtain numbed 3 is ObamaCare. The multi-trillion dollar liberal attempt to buy political power. Bought by the healthcare lobby and paid for by higher taxes, Medicare cuts, and foreign debt auctions.

Congressman Mitchell wants us to believe he read the bill. He didn’t. But even more insulting is his insistence that he wouldn’t vote for the bill, before Nancy Pelosi rapped his knuckles into far left obedience.

This madness must stop. We need true leaders that are willing to take on their own party when they are wrong, and who are willing to fight for the American taxpayer and do what’s right.

The Arizona liberals are waging an all out war, reverting to desperate negative attacks that are meant to distract us from the issues Mitchell will lose on.

Mitchell has hundreds of thousand of dollars behind his dark attack messages, but we are going to give him the fight of his career.

With your support, we can send Congressman Mitchell and this Pelosi Congress packing!
That starts today - - not tomorrow, not in a few minutes. Right now. David Schweikert needs your help to fight and win. Our country, our economy, and the kind of nation we are is dependent on winning back the U.S. House of Representatives for the People.
Can David Schweikert count on your support today?
We cannot afford to lose this fight.

Giffords Not Among Democrats Against Tax Increase

Most reasonable people understand that raising taxes in an economic downturn is foolhardy. This is why a group of 31 House Democrats sent a letter to Speaker Pelosi saying “in recent weeks, we have heard from a diverse spectrum of economists, small business owners, and families who have voiced concerns that raising any taxes right now could negatively impact economic growth.” These Democrats have therefore announced their support for extending the Bush tax cuts.

Sadly, Gabby Giffords is not among them. Staying squarely in Pelosi’s fold. Giffords remains foolishly steadfast in her support of raising taxes in the middle of the Great Recession.

“An increase in small business tax would seriously
jepordize any chance of real job growth in Arizona,” said Bob Westerman , Pima County GOP Chairman.

“If Giffords wants more jobs, she clearly
doesn’t understand how jobs are created.”

Raising taxes now will cost countless Americans their jobs. It’s only fair that it should cost Giffords her job, too.

AZ REPUBLICAN CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATES UPDATE for Friday Sept 10, 2010

Mr. Grijalva, Social Security Isn't Wealth Redistribution

In an Op-Ed for USA Today, Rep. Raul Grijalva suggests eliminating the earnings cap on social security payments as a way to balance systemic deficits within the system. Yet it's clear from his article that Mr. Grijalva neither understands what "Social Security" is, nor that what he's proposing is simply wealth redistribution.

First, there is no such thing as "Social Security". That's just the name most people use to refer to OASDI (Old Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance). It's an insurance policy: not an entitlement, not a tax, and certainly not a vehicle for social engineering and wealth redistribution.

FICA payments are more accurately referred to as "premiums". In essence, they're no different than the monthly payments to your automobile or health insurer: you pay up front for defined benefits in the future.

Individuals earning more than $106,800 per year are simply buying the most expensive insurance policy available. Removing the cap on earnings, unless you also remove the cap on benefits, is--at its core--simply making one individual pay for another person's retirement plan. Grijalva's plan isn't about making people pay their "fair share", which they already do, it's about handing your hard earned money to someone else in the name of socialist "equality".

And while this might sound appealing to someone like Raul Grijalva, with his extensive ties to socialist individuals and organizations throughout this country, it's most certainly not the American way. We've seen the failed experiments in socialism across the globe, and there's no need to replicate their failures here at home.

Until the 1960's OASDI actually showed a profit. Like any insurance company, they invested the premiums collected from American taxpayers and invested them in the market, earning a fair return. Had spendthrift politicians like Mr. Grijalva not dipped their beaks into the pot, OASDI would still be fully funded today.

The way to make this program solvent again isn't by using it as a vehicle for wealth redistribution, instead we need to repeal the laws allowing politicians to spend Social Security dollars on their latest pork barrel project, create sustainable economic growth, and reduce discretionary spending to reign in our deficits.

Campaigning with Jesse Kelly in Arizona’s Eighth Congressional District

Posted by Rep. Kevin McCarthy (Profile)
Thursday, September 9th

I’m traveling across the country helping Republican candidates take back the House of Representatives from Democrats and help put our country back on the path to prosperity. Here on RedState I will take you along to see what I’m seeing as we work to re-take our government.

A few days ago, I traveled to Arizona’s Eighth Congressional District to campaign with Jesse Kelly. Jesse is working hard with the Republican grassroots to defeat Democrat Gabrielle Giffords. Jesse’s energetic supporters were eager to hear his conservative message of fiscal responsibility and border security, and I know they’ll work hard to get him elected.

Jesse knows we need to cut reckless government spending
programs and lower taxes so businesses can create jobs. He also understands that we have to respect the rule of the law and control our borders.

How important is this race? A local Arizona television station said:

Political experts said the winner of this race could
determine who controls the political majority in Washington.

We need Jesse Kelly in Congress to help bring an end to Washington’s reckless ways.

Please visit
Jesse Kelly’s website and keep up the great work,

Congressman Kevin McCarthy

Franks Expresses Condolences Following Lake Havasu City Shooting

September 10, 2010 - Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) released the following statement regarding the shooting that has been deemed the worst in Lake Havasu City's history, which occurred August 29th and claimed the lives of five people and the gunman:

"There are no words I can express that would make sense of what is a senselessly violent act. Lake Havasu City and the entire surrounding community has been understandably shaken by the news of this tragic act.

"As the families involved, some of whom are even now in the process of planning services in memory of their loved ones, continue to endure the pain of having to lay a loved one to rest, they can do so knowing that the entire surrounding community stands ready to support them through this difficult time. Indeed, to those who, as a result of this cowardly act, lost family members and friends and are still struggling for a way to cope with the grief: truly, you are in my prayers."
