Rodney Glassman’s Ph.D. Work Questioned

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

Arizona Daily Star: Glassman’s Ph.D. Work Questioned

“U.S. Senate candidate Rodney Glassman is facing allegations he plagiarized some parts of his dissertation for his doctorate in arid land resource sciences. The 246-page dissertation, completed in 2005, has many passages that match, nearly word for word, previously published scientific works by others. ... In the introduction discussing the ‘agrarian tradition in the United States,’ for example, the former Tucson city councilman wrote, ‘From these humble beginnings, the process by which Americans have been taught about the art and science of using renewable resources has expanded and changed many times.’ There are neither citations nor quotation marks, although the same quote appears in a July 1999 research summary by the Western Region Coordinating Committee for Agricultural Literacy.

That same Western Region paper has the sentence: ‘For nearly 50 years, such programs concentrated on preparing students for careers in production agriculture,’ which also appears in Glassman's paper word for word, without quotes or parenthetical references. In another example, he writes, ‘Technological and economic forces have led to a reduction in the number of farms and a comparable increase in average farm size.’ Again, no quotes and no citations. But run that sentence through Google and you'll find a 1988 paper, ‘Understanding Agriculture: New Directions for Education.’

Elsewhere in Glassman's dissertation, he noted, ‘The Food and Fiber Systems Literacy Framework explained what an agriculturally literate high school graduate should comprehend. Using a series of standards in five thematic areas, the framework delineated the necessary components for understanding the way food and fiber systems relate to daily life.’ Those two identical sentences are found in a 2001 assessment by researchers at Oklahoma State and Southwest Texas State universities.

‘These allegations raise serious questions about Rodney Glassman's integrity and fitness to serve in public office,’ said Sen. John McCain spokesman Brian Rogers.” -- Arizona Daily Star, 9/30/10

Allegations that Rodney Glassman may have plagiarized parts of his dissertation came up in a "progressive" blog.

U.S. Senate candidate Rodney Glassman is facing allegations he plagiarized some parts of his dissertation for his doctorate in arid land resource sciences.

The 246-page dissertation, completed in 2005, has many passages that match, nearly word for word, previously published scientific works by others.

The allegations first surfaced on a local, self-described "progressive" blog Wednesday.

While information in the public domain that amounts to "common knowledge" doesn't have to be cited, in academic papers, words must be placed in quotes if they're used exactly. Parenthetical citations are used when paraphrasing other people's ideas.

In response to Star questions, Glassman's campaign released a statement saying the dissertation included "original, experimental research" testing whether hands-on learning made a difference in classroom learning for 400 fourth-graders in the Vail School District.

"His research, dissertation, and Ph.D. were reviewed, guided, and approved by his committee of tenured, research academics from the University of Arizona College of Agriculture," his spokesman, Blake Morlock, said, noting articles using the research were subsequently published nationally and internationally.
In the introduction discussing the "agrarian tradition in the United States," for example, the former Tucson city councilman wrote, "From these humble beginnings, the process by which Americans have been taught about the art and science of using renewable resources has expanded and changed many times."

There are neither citations nor quotation marks, although the same quote appears in a July 1999 research summary by the Western Region Coordinating Committee for Agricultural Literacy.

That same Western Region paper has the sentence: "For nearly 50 years, such programs concentrated on preparing students for careers in production agriculture," which also appears in Glassman's paper word for word, without quotes or parenthetical references.

In another example, he writes, "Technological and economic forces have led to a reduction in the number of farms and a comparable increase in average farm size." Again, no quotes and no citations. But run that sentence through Google and you'll find a 1988 paper, "Understanding Agriculture: New Directions for Education."

Elsewhere in Glassman's dissertation, he noted, "The Food and Fiber Systems Literacy Framework explained what an agriculturally literate high school graduate should comprehend. Using a series of standards in five thematic areas, the framework delineated the necessary components for understanding the way food and fiber systems relate to daily life."

Those two identical sentences are found in a 2001 assessment by researchers at Oklahoma State and Southwest Texas State universities.

All but one of the examples cited above are from a Star review of Glassman's work, beyond the examples listed in the blog.

"These allegations raise serious questions about Rodney Glassman's integrity and fitness to serve in public office," said Sen. John McCain spokesman Brian Rogers.

Stuart Marsh, a professor who served on the dissertation committee, declined to comment, citing privacy concerns. James Knight, who also served on the committee, said he had not heard of the allegations and had not had a chance to see any of the documentation. He said direct passages from other works are required to have the proper citation.

Morlock said there would be no further comment beyond the statement.

AZ REPUBLICAN CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATES UPDATE for Thursday Sept 30, 2010

Polling Shows McClung / Grijalva Race Up For Grabs
September 29th, 2010

For Immediate Release

The first concrete data on the race between Republican challenger Ruth McClung and her Democratic opponent, incumbent Raul Grijalva, is in--and it's not looking so good for Mr. Grijalva. A survey of 450 voters in Arizona's 7th Congressional District shows Rep. Grijalva with a narrowing 7-point lead in this key race.

The polling, conducted by American Political Consultants at the behest of the McClung campaign, has a margin of 4.3%.

"Voters are tired of politicians who put their own interests ahead of their constituents," noted Ruth McClung. "Mr. Grijalva's boycott of his home state, his failed economic policies and his indifference to the voters is catching up with him."

42% of those polled said they were supporting Rep. Grijalva. While 35% were in favor of McClung, with a whopping 23% still undecided.

"It's unusual to have that many people undecided this late in the election cycle," said McClung, noting that Grijalva has secured more than 60% of the vote in each of his past two elections. "It's clear that a huge percentage of the voters in CD7 are tired of Mr. Grijalva and his antics. Now we just have to get my message out there, let people know that there is an alternative-someone who will work to create jobs, not boycott them."
The message from voters is clear. Raul Grijalva's tax-borrow-and-spend policies, his rash and harmful boycott, and the failures of this congress and administration are wrong for Arizona. Ruth McClung supports lower taxes, smaller government, and job growth. Voters in CD7 have a choice, and that choice is clear.

"It should be a great morning, full of information and give and take. I'm looking forward to explaining why Proposition 106 is a must for every voter who opposes the President's monster bill," said Dr. Eric Novack, chairman of Arizonans for Health Care Freedom and author of 106.

Novack will be joined by Republican Congressional candidate Dr. Paul Gosar. "He's a dentist and I'm a surgeon," said Novack. "Together, we'll give voters a broad look at health care reform."

Job-killing tax threat left hanging over America

PHOENIX (September 29, 2010) – By the margin of one vote the Democrat-controlled Congress has voted to shut down, ignoring important business yet to be done. Democrats in Congress continue to threaten the American people and our nation’s economy with the most massive tax hikes in history," said Ben Quayle, candidate for CD 3 in Arizona.

Without Congressional action, the current tax rates in America will end on December 31, and on January 1 the American people will be hit with the largest tax increase in history. Making the current tax rates permanent for all Americans is a critical necessity for restoring economic growth and putting our citizens back to work. Uncertainty surrounding taxes is destroying business confidence and preventing job creation.

“Massive tax hikes and the threat of massive tax hikes are exactly what Americans and American businesses do not need as we continue to struggle for economic recovery,” Quayle said.

"Continued uncertainty about tax hikes simply builds more uncertainty in the marketplace," Quayle said, as he has throughout this campaign. “Small businesses generate the vast majority of new jobs in America today, roughly two-thirds of the net new jobs each year,” said Quayle. “It is our obligation to help these business owners keep their employees, hire more workers, and create the goods and services that fuel our economy. Hanging this tax hike over their heads is a job killer in Arizona and every state in America. “

“The next jobs lost should be those of the elected representatives who have one again damaged American competitiveness and economic recovery,” Quayle said.

About Ben Quayle

Ben Quayle is running in the 3rd Congressional District of Arizona. Ben Quayle is the fourth generation in his family to live and work in Arizona. Ben will fight for the Third Congressional District of Arizona, conservative principles and the future of this great nation. Ben will cut taxes and spending, fight for real healthcare reform not a government takeover, defend our country and our troops, end bailouts and so-called stimulus, secure our borders and restore America’s leadership in the world. Franks Sends Letter Asking Clinton to Condemn Ahmadinejad Remarks
September 29, 2010 - In a letter released today, Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) asked Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to publicly condemn recent remarks by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Franks asks that Clinton "deny a future visa to President Ahmadinejad until specific conditions are met by the Iranian government," also adding that, "President Ahmadinejad's belief that the United States was behind the attacks of September 11th and that 'the majority of the American people...agree with this view' should be immediately and firmly discredited."

Franks points out that, "Iran has announced that it is now enriching uranium to a level of 20%. This is four times the necessary enrichment level for peaceful energy generation purposes. They now have enough low-enriched uranium for two nuclear weapons, if enriched further," and that, "Iran refuses to fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) by answering vital questions about its nuclear program."

In light of the evidence, Franks says that, "President Ahmadinejad's words should be viewed as threats. He mocks the very foundation of legitimate democracies and freedom-loving nations," and urges Secretary of State Clinton to "publicly condemn the remarks of President Ahmadinejad relating to nuclear weapons, Israel's right to exist, and U.S. involvement in the September 11th attacks," and to, "prohibit President Ahmadinejad's entrance into the United States in the future."

The full text of the letter is attached.
###

Congressman Franks is serving his fourth term in the U.S. House of Representatives, and is a member of the Committee on Armed Services, Strategic Forces Subcommittee, Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee, Military Readiness Subcommittee, Committee on the Judiciary, Constitution Subcommittee, and is Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law.

TOM HORNE: POLICE NEED TO CHECK IMMIGRATION STATUS OF CRIMINALS

HORNE: POLICE NEED TO CHECK IMMIGRATION STATUS OF CRIMINALS

Republican Attorney General nominee Tom Horne says yesterday's announced attempt by labor unions to prevent officers from checking a criminal's immigration status is irresponsible. Horne is endorsed by numerous law enforcement agencies in Arizona representing front line police officers, sheriff’s deputies and highway patrol officers. Horne is calling on his Democrat opponent, Felecia Rotellini to denounce these efforts that are led by unions who have supported her candidacy.

"The law could not be clearer, a person who enters the United States without going through the appropriate process is here illegally," Horne noted. "For the AFL-CIO, which supports Felecia Rotellini's candidacy, to demand that the Obama administration strip local and state law enforcement agencies of the power to check the immigration status of arrestees is absurd and irresponsible. Ms. Rotellini should denounce this attempt to hamstring law enforcement professionals of their ability to do their job. It is already bad enough that she has said that S.B. 1070 'does nothing to solve our immigration problem', she wants to make the problem worse by giving police even fewer powers to prevent criminal activity. It is irresponsible of her, and it proves she has no business laying claim to being an effective advocate for S.B. 1070 as it faces the Obama legal assault in federal court."

"I am confident Arizona voters will see through this charade and reject the tactics of the AFL-CIO and its preferred candidates who absurdly support illegal immigrants while putting citizens at risk, Horne said"

Sign Skulduggery

Sign Skulduggery

Yesterday afternoon we hand delivered a copy of our Press Release to local Democrats.

A few hours later, Brandon Schmoll saw over 15 of his signs vandalized.

In 2001, Harry Mitchell admitted stealing his opponent's signs. In the last few weeks, over 100 David Schweikert signs were vandalized or stolen.

The Democrats may take down our signs, but they can't go door-to-door and remove every one of our door hangers.

That's why we need your help.

Thanks to 14 generous donors we're almost halfway to our goal of raising $2,000 for our Get Out The Vote efforts.

We need to raise $1,000 more.

Don't let the Democrat thugs and thieves win.

If everyone on this list donated a minimum of $10, we'd reach our goal and we'd be able to bypass the sign bandits and take our message straight to the people.

Please donate today. And please pass this on to your Republican and Conservative friends.

$10 bucks each is all we need to counter the sign skulduggery.

OBLITERATING A GENERATION By DICK MORRIS

Published on TheHill.com on September 28, 2010

Printer-Friendly Version

Thanks to the leadership of President Obama, Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid, the Democratic Party is facing the biggest defeat in midterm elections in the past 110 years, perhaps surpassing the modern record of a 74-seat gain set in 1922. They will also lose control of the Senate.

Republicans are now leading in 54 Democratic House districts. In 19 more, the incumbent congressman is under 50 percent and his GOP challenger is within five points. That makes 73 seats where victory is within easy grasp for the Republican Party. The only reason the list is not longer is that there are 160 Democratic House districts that were considered so strongly blue that there is no recent polling available.

There is no Democratic message. President Obama is heralding education -- an issue never mentioned on the campaign trail. Secretary of State Clinton is trying to restart the peace talks in the Middle East. Attorney General Holder is re-evaluating online national-security taps. And a hundred Democrats are scrambling about on their own trying to get reelected!

The Democratic campaigns they are waging are formulaic. They make no attempt to defend the administration, but run away from it where possible. They never mention the words stimulus, healthcare reform, card-check, GM takeover or cap-and-trade.

Instead, they are running almost exclusively negative ads. They base their campaigns on tax liens, failed marriages, DWIs and the like. Where there is a paucity of dirt, they resort to three prefab negatives: that their opponent favors a 23 percent national sales tax, that he wants to privatize Social Security and that he is shipping jobs overseas.

The Republican answers are simple. Republicans want a 23 percent value-added tax (VAT) only as part of eliminating the income tax. Some Republicans do back letting people under 55 divert one-third of their FICA taxes to approved investment alternatives, and most voters agree with them. But, on the campaign trail, simply saying -- accurately -- that "I oppose any change at all in Social Security for our seniors" takes care of it. And Republicans rebut the jobs overseas charge by citing how the incumbent backed cash-for-clunkers, where 40 percent of the cars bought were foreign; the TARP bailout, which paid billions to overseas banks; and the GM bailout, where two-thirds of the jobs were overseas.

It is a pathetic defense, easily pierced and defeated.

Now the field of battle will increasingly shift. The marginal Democrats -- the freshmen and sophomores -- are mostly gone. The seats of Southern conservative Democrats largely already lost. Now the combat shifts to the previously safe seats occupied by many in the House leadership, including, perhaps, the seats of Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (Md.) and Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (Mass.).

This new attack will force the Democrats to spend their resources defending their base and make it even easier to pick off marginal members. And while Republican resources shift to the previously solidly Democratic districts, eager donors anxious to develop relationships with the new Republican majority will fill their shoes.

In the Senate, Republicans lead in eight Democratic seats: North Dakota, Indiana, Arkansas, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, West Virginia and Illinois. In Nevada, the ninth, Harry Reid has been stuck at 44 percent of the vote since Aug. 1, when his Social Security/Medicare attack was rebutted. He is dead in the water. His negatives flood the airwaves but are not working, and the ads run by Karl Rove's American Crossroads have him pinned down.

For the 10th seat, the GOP has five options: New York, where Joe DioGuardi is only one point behind Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in the latest published poll; California, where Sen. Barbara Boxer is stubbornly below 50; Washington state, where the lead has seesawed back and forth between Dino Rossi and Sen. Patty Murray; Connecticut, where Linda McMahon has closed to 50-45; and Delaware, where Christine O'Donnell may yet come back and has closed the gap to nine points.

And where is Obama while all this is happening? Proposing new initiatives on education!

No Democrat? No Discount!:Bill Montgomery for County Attorney

No Democrat? - No Discount!

Folks seem to think that without a Democrat in the General Election, we can just breeze along. Unfortunately, printers, ad agencies, and other vendors do not offer a discount for no Democrat in a General Election, meaning we still have to work hard to ensure we can communicate with voters. And why do we need to communicate? Because my opponent is on record as being in favor of legalizing drugs and prostitution and does not believe that we have an illegal immigration problem in Maricopa County. If we do not make sure voters know about my record and experience, we leave voters guessing as to who to vote for to be our next County Attorney. Your contribution of $25, $50, $100 or the maximum of $410 will help us get our message out.

Half Way There!

The current fundraising drive started a little over 36 hours ago and we are half way to our goal of $3,000 in 3 days. With early voting starting in just 8 days, your donation right now of $25, $50, $100 or the maximum of $410 will help us reach our goal at an important time in the election cycle.

Republicans 'kicking butt' in social media

Emma Woollacott
Wed 29th Sep 2010

The Rebublicans are set to win in the November mid-term elections, if their Facebook and Twitter presence is to be believed.

They've got five four times as many Facebook fans and five times as many Twitter followers as Democratic candidates, according to voter registration campaigning group Headcount.

"As an organization that blends politics with pop culture, we spend a lot of time thinking about social media. So we thought it would be interesting to check out what the Midterm Election candidates are doing online, and what we found kind of made our heads spin," says Headcount's executive director Andy Bernstein.

"It’s a social media landslide."

Republican candidates for the Senate have amassed 1.43 million fans on Facebook, compared to just under 300,000 for Democrats. The difference is even more striking on Twitter, where Repubican Senatorial candidates collectively have close to 520,000 followers, and Democrats fewer than 90,000.

Headcount tried eliminating Arizona Republican Senator John McCain and California Senate hopeful Carly Fiorina, who respectively have the largest number of Facebook fans and Twitter followers.

Even then, though, Republican Senate candidates average 20,985 Facebook fans and 5,892 Twitter followers. Democrats average 8,260 and 2,591 respectively.

"It may not come as a real surprise that Republicans are out in front. The 'enthusiasm gap' between the parties is well documented, and social media activity is a great barometer of people's passions," says Bernstein.

"But four or five times bigger?"

The full report is here.

AZ REPUBLICAN CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATES UPDATE for Wed Sept 29, 2010

ARIZONA CONGRESSMAN JOHN SHADEGG ENDORSES BEN QUAYLE FOR CONGRESS

Phoenix, AZ (September 30, 2010) — Ben Quayle, Republican candidate for Arizona’s 3rd Congressional District, today announced that U.S. Congressman John Shadegg (AZ-3) endorses his candidacy for Congress.

"Ben Quayle promises to be a solid conservative vote, who will fight the radical agenda of Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama," said Congressman Shadegg. "He recognizes the critical need to halt the unending growth of the federal government and the need to stop spending our children’s and grandchildren's money. And, he understands the need to repeal Obamacare and give Americans the ability to make their own health care decisions."

“I am honored to have the endorsement of Congressman John Shadegg and I will continue his fight for the people of this District and the founding principles of the nation,” said Ben Quayle. “Representative Shadegg has established a long history of serving honorably and with unmovable conviction. I will strive to do the same.”

Congressman Shadegg announced his retirement from Congress earlier this year after serving as the Representative from Arizona’s Third Congressional District since 1994.

Doing the Math.

Ruth McClung is running for Congress in Arizona's 7th congressional district against ORP lapdog, Raul Grijalva. You can learn more about Ruth here. Please support her if you can.

More often than not, TEA party candidates committed to rolling back the disastrous policies of Obama-Reid-Pelosi (ORP) are characterized as moonbat whack jobs devoid of education and intelligence. Ruth McClung, candidate for the House inArizona CD7, is anything but. With a degree in physics and work experience at an engineering firm, McClung brings to the table credentials that are both uncommon and difficult to disparage. Her background sets her apart from members of both the political and chattering classes, most of of whom wouldn't know the divergence of a vector field if it hit them in the face.

 First Things First.

McClung's positions are solidly conservative: anti-big giovernment; pro-free enterprise; pro-liberty; pro-national security; pro-"border sanity"; pro-school vouchers; pro-life and pro-family. With regard to health care, she favors health insurance tax deductions for individuals, health savings account tax incentives, out-of-state insurance purchases and tort reform.

Her opponent, Raul Grijalva, is an ORP lapdog who attracted national attention by calling for a boycott of Arizona businesses in response to HB1070. Putting him out to pasture is a worthy objective

CD7 is 45% Democratic. But, with a significant number of independents in the district, internal polling — both Democrat and Republican — suggests that the race is winnable — go here (starts at 3:00 minutes). Supporting McClung is a chance to make a difference.

Exception to the Rule. Generally speaking, credentialed intellectuals sort into two categories: the hopelessly naive, and the promoters of self-serving agendas. But to every generalization there are exceptions. Ruth is one of these. She complements professional training with good sense and a love of country. If elected, she will bring to Washington, an understanding of issues such as cap and trade that is sorely lacking. Ask supporters (Democrat and Republican) of carbon abatement about the physics of climate change and you'll get talking points, gibberish or both. Ask Ruth, and you'll get an explanation.

Doing the Math. For the obvious reasons, it's important that at least some of people voting on issues related to science know what they're talking about; that they understand what's known, and more important, what's not. That means being able to read the scientific literature for yourself, as opposed to relying on advisors to do it for you. McClung's training in math and physics will allow her to do that. What she doesn't already know, she can learn.

Contribute to Ruth's campaign if you can, and spread the word.

Why I am voting for Dr. Paul Gosar

September 22, 2010

I am Sheriff Joe Richards and I am a registered Independent and two years ago I endorsed Ann Kirkpatrick for Congress. I believed she was someone who would go to Washington and finally represent the people. What we learned was Ann Kirkpatrick voted for bigger government and not for her constituents.

That is why I cannot support her now and have endorsed Dr. Paul Gosar. I believe that Paul Gosar is the kind of straight talking leader rural Arizona needs. He will stop the runaway spending, lower our taxes and repeal Obamacare! He’ll fight to secure our border and stop the Obama administration’s assault on Arizona! That is why I have endorsed Dr. Paul Gosar and would encourage you to join me

Rural Arizona deserves to be represented by someone who cares deeply about each and every one of us, Republican, Independent and even Democrat. It’s time to bring honest, trustworthy representation back to the People of Congressional District One. Dr. Paul Gosar is just the man to do it.

Join me in supporting Dr. Paul Gosar for Congress in November.

Abracadabra! The stimulus worked?

Not so fast!

With just 34 days until the election, we are down to the wire – needing to raise every single dollar to tell voters the truth about this liberal government’s out of control spending agenda and failed economic policies.

Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, and Congressman Mitchell are hoping that if they tell a lie long enough, the people will believe it!

Not only do we know better, but we can do better!
We deserve a Representative in Congress who doesn’t scam the people of Arizona with falsehoods, outright lies, and legislative cons.

Arizona deserves a Congressman who understands how to really create jobs, grow the economy, and restore prosperity. Mitchell’s idea of a jobs program is more government and guess what… his Obama-Pelosi policies have failed.

Congressman Mitchell said that the stimulus would create 74,000 jobs in Arizona and a minimum of 8,000 jobs in our district.

After wasting $376 million dollars through the “stimulus” alone – yep, you read that figure right – unemployment has risen 15.6% and we’ve lost more than 18,000 jobs.

Liberals like Congressman Mitchell have failed Arizona.

Just another out-of-touch politician spinning lies and wasting our tax dollars!

The Obama stimulus has been a tragic failure from the beginning. Our community deserves a Representative in the House who knows how to get the job done right.

David Schweikert is a tax cutter. He believes people should keep more of what they earn. He fights for pro-growth policies that preserve our freedoms and get America back to work.

Congressman Mitchell’s idea of a jobs program is to waste $510,000 per person on flimsy proposals that are all pork and no progress!

Mitchell has squandered, he has pillaged, and he has gone too far.

We can’t afford that kind of debt, brought by the senseless liberal spending agenda.

Just 34 days to go… Mitchell and his liberal cronies need to be sent home, and we can do that right here!

We can have a strong recovery, but it requires replacing liberals like Mitchell and their failed Keynesian policies that just don’t work!

David Schweikert will defend taxpayers, clean up the waste, and restore America’s prosperity with policies that remove barriers to free enterprise and create jobs in the private sector.

Our community is full of entrepreneurs and innovators who are being harmed by policies that keep them down, tax them to stagnation, tie them up in red tape.

More jobs, less government. David Schweikert for Congress.
