The McCain Update - September 15, 2007

Amid a fierce national debate on the war, John McCain started off an action packed week in Washington at the hearings with General David Petraeus, the U.S. commander in Iraq, and Ambassador Ryan Crocker. John McCain drew a sharp contrast with Democratic rivals, highlighting his four years of advocacy for and his staunch support for the troop "surge" and denunciation of liberal smear politics from MoveOn.org (watch video).
On Wednesday, John McCain kicked off his three state "No Surrender" bus tour, fighting for victory in Iraq with stops throughout Iowa and New Hampshire. This weekend, the tour will continue through South Carolina, culminating with a rally at The Citadel on Saturday. Read the latest from the "No Surrender" tour on our website throughout the weekend.
This Sunday, John McCain will be on NBC's "Meet The Press" in a joint appearance with John Kerry to discuss the future course of the fight against radical Islamic extremism. Please be sure to tune in and watch. "As far as I know John doesn't smoke cigars or
paint as well as Winston Churchill did, but other than that, the similarities
really do strike you."
- Former CIA Director R. James Woolsey

John McCain's "No Surrender" Tour

John McCain hit the trail with a strong defense of the troop surge in Iraq under the banner "No Surrender." He is traveling to Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina to rally support for our troops and their mission in Iraq.

New York Times' Caucus Blog: "General David Petraeus, who's leading our forces and doing a superb job right now because of John McCain's support ..." : "[Robert C. McFarlane] said that Mr. McCain, for his entire career, had been, 'standing up for what's right, criticizing the Pentagon when it's wrong, criticizing the president when he hasn't got the right strategy or enough troops - standing alone until we get somebody like Dave Petraeus, whose leading our forces and doing a superb job right now because of John McCain's support.''

The New York Times: "Enthusiastic Crowds … Cheered." "The veterans in the packed hall, who wore blue 'No Surrender' stickers, cheered. … On the road, the campaign is drawing enthusiastic crowds."

Hotline Blog: McCain's Message "Prompting Applause And Shouts Of 'Amen' From The Audience ... "'I believe that we should not choose to lose in Iraq,' McCain said, prompting applause and shouts of 'Amen' from the audience of about a hundred veterans."

Radio Iowa Reports Vietnam Veteran Frank Rinehart “Rode His Motorcycle From Missouri To Iowa To Meet McCain On The Campaign Trail” And Praised McCain’s Foreign Policy Stance. “But Vietnam veteran Frank Rinehart is more focused on McCain’s foreign policy credentials. ‘My reason for supporting him is we have to win,’ Rinehart says. ‘The implications of us losing and radical Islam winning are gigantic.’ Rinehart rode his motorcycle from Missouri to Iowa to meet McCain on the campaign trail.”

Former CIA Director James Woolsey: “There has been one person in prominent public life who has been right about this war in Iraq from the beginning. John McCain was advocating the surge over four years ago in the summer of 2003. And if we had followed the strategy he told us we should at the time, and he certainly saw it before most anybody else, including before me, we would not be in the difficult situation that we now are digging ourselves out of. But with this surge, as he has supported we can, I think, pull this out in Iraq. And most importantly with the kind of leadership that John McCain shows, we can pull out victory in this long war against international terrorism as a whole.”

The timeline details John McCain's unrelenting call for a new strategy for victory in Iraq -- the strategy currently showing signs of success on the ground.

Taking on the Democrats

Senator Clinton said recently that believing General Petraeus' testimony requires a 'willing suspension of disbelief.' This week, MoveOn.org attacked and dishonored General Petraeus, a man of integrity who has served his nation with dedication all of his life.

Watch this video as John McCain forcefully denounces the shameless propaganda put forth by the extreme left.

"He takes a big whack at Hillary using her own words and saying that it 'must take the willing suspension of disbelief to not repudiate an advertisement run by a radical left wing organization' that impugns General Petraeus. His zinger: 'If you're not tough enough to repudiate an attack like that, you're not tough enough to be president.'"

Hotline Blog:"At both events yesterday, he held up an oversized poster of MoveOn's 'General Betray Us' graphic, slamming it as 'one of the worst things I've seen in my life.' He had tough words too for Hillary Clinton, who - like all of her Democratic colleagues - has stayed mum about the ad. In Waterloo, he challenged Clinton to speak out against MoveOn's message; in Des Moines, he criticized her comment in Tuesday's hearing that rosy outlooks of success in Iraq require 'willing suspension of disbelief.' McCain shot back, 'It's a 'willing suspension of disbelief' that Senator Clinton knows more than General Petraeus does about events on the ground in Iraq.'"
