First 2008 Presidential Town Hall Meeting


Last night, John McCain held the first of what he hoped would be ten joint town hall appearances with Barack Obama. Unfortunately, Senator Obama chose not to attend. The town hall meeting, at Federal Hall in New York City, was broadcast live on The Fox News Channel. This historic location is where President George Washington first took the oath of office.

At the event, John McCain answered questions about important issues facing voters this year, including the economy, energy prices and the war. Last week, John McCain invited Senator Obama to participate in this event, hoping to start what would be a series of ten town hall meetings where both candidates would travel the country to answer questions from real voters.

Senator Obama has yet to agree to meet us in these town halls, which would revolutionize our political process and start a real change in the tone of politics. John McCain believes in this effort and is putting it into action. There will be another town hall meeting next Thursday, so be sure to check JohnMcCain.com soon for more information.


Father's Day

Citizens for McCain




Citizens for McCain is a new grassroots organization within our campaign for people who put country before political party and support the candidate for president who has a proven record of bipartisanship. Senator Joe Lieberman formed this group because of his strong belief in John McCain's character, judgment and willingness to work with leaders of both parties. We are all Americans, and we have an obligation to do what is best for our nation regardless of political party.

Time and time again John McCain has put his country first. From refusing early release when he was held captive in Vietnam to his courage to stand up to the failed Iraq war plan, his choices were not always the easy things to do. In fact, they were usually very difficult, and often threatened his political career. But John McCain did what was right.

John McCain knows he will be the president of all Americans, not just the ones that vote for him. With an official opponent in Democrat Barack Obama, the general election campaign is underway. On Tuesday night in New Orleans, John McCain outlined his vision for our country and the significance of the great debate we are about to engage in.

Over the next five months, John McCain and Senator Obama will debate the future direction of our country. In the end, the American people will recognize that John McCain is a leader we can believe in, ready to act to protect our country, grow our economy and reform our government.

In this election, Americans will have a choice between the right change that will move our country forward and the wrong change that will take us backward. No matter who wins this election, the direction of this country is going to change dramatically.

The McCain Update - May 30, 2008

It has been 873 days since Senator Obama's one and only visit to Iraq. Yet, despite zero first hand knowledge of conditions on the ground since the change in strategy, Senator Obama advocates withdrawal of U.S. troops. While he is happy to hold unconditional presidential meetings with the world's worst dictators, he has yet to meet with General Petraeus about the improving conditions in Iraq.

Before Senator Obama decides to override the recommendations of our commanders in the field and surrender the flight, he should have the judgment to see for himself first-hand the conditions on the ground. Reducing Nuclear Threats

John McCain believes that we can build a safer world, one with fewer nuclear weapons and in which proliferation, instability and nuclear terrorism are far less likely. To achieve this, John McCain outlined a series of initiatives that will enhance nuclear security and prevent proliferation.

He spoke about his initiatives at the University of Denver in Colorado on Tuesday.

The global spread of nuclear weapons demands immediate action. As president, John McCain will establish a long-term commitment to a world free of nuclear weapons.

At the same time, the U.S. must continue to deploy a safe and reliable nuclear deterrent, robust missile defense and superior conventional forces. He supports further strategic arms reductions and will seek to reduce the size of our nuclear arsenal to the lowest number possible, consistent with our security requirements and global commitments.

John McCain will work to strengthen existing international treaties and institutions to combat proliferation and develop new ones where necessary. To prevent countries from using civilian nuclear programs as a cover for the development of weapons, he will limit the further spread of enrichment and reprocessing.

On Monday, John McCain gave a Memorial Day speech at the New Mexico Veterans Memorial in Albuquerque, honoring and thanking our nation's veterans for the sacrifice they have made serving our country.

The Global Economy and Relations with Cuba

John McCain laid out his vision for America in the global economy during a speech to the National Restaurant Association in Chicago on Monday. As president, John McCain would protect American businesses through free trade agreements and worker assistance programs. He recognizes that exports are essential to American workers and employers across our nation. Click here to read his speech.

On Tuesday, John McCain outlined his vision for a free Cuba. While Senator Obama has an inconsistent record regarding normalized relations with Cuba and unconditionally meeting with Raul Castro, John McCain is committed to ensuring that the Cuban people enjoy the blessings of freedom and democracy. John McCain will press the Cuban regime to unconditionally release all political prisoners, legalize all political parties, labor unions and free media, and hold internationally monitored elections. Solutions for Rising Gas Prices



John McCain understands that Americans are hurting from higher gasoline prices and rising food costs. As president, he will act immediately to provide the American people with relief and to reduce the pain of increasing expenses.

John McCain believes we should institute a summer gas tax holiday. Congress should suspend the 18.4 cent federal gas tax and 24.4 cent diesel tax from Memorial Day to Labor Day to provide much-needed relief.To reduce demand, John McCain will stop filling the strategic petroleum reserve (SPR).

International demand for oil is bolstered by federal purchases for the SPR, and there is no reason to fill it when oil is so expensive.

Ethanol subsidies, tariff barriers and sugar quotas drive up food prices and hurt Americans. However, we cannot take the wrong direction and cut off trade for American goods.

John McCain will end policies that contribute to higher transportation and food costs.

John McCain appeared on Saturday Night Live and The Ellen Degeneres Show this past week. It was his first appearance on the show since hosting in 2002.

Today is Mother's Day and in our family, as well as in so many others, it is a day to give thanks to the mothers in our lives.

Vision for America's Judiciary System

In North Carolina on Tuesday, John McCain outlined his judicial philosophy and vision.

As president, John McCain will look for accomplished men and women with proven records of excellence in the law and proven commitments to judicial restraint to serve on the federal bench.

The proper role of the judiciary has become one of the defining issues of this presidential election. The next president will nominate hundreds of qualified judges to the federal courts and the impact of these choices will reach far into the future.

John McCain will bring care, thought and deliberation to the process of selecting his judicial nominees. The nominees will be men and women of experience, wisdom and humility who do their work with impartiality and honor. They will be faithful to the Constitution and understand that there are clear limits to judicial and federal power. Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito will serve as the models for John McCain’s judicial nominees.

Defending Freedom & Dignity

John McCain spoke Wednesday at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan about his vision for defending the freedom and dignity of the world's vulnerable. Freedom confers responsibilities, and John McCain believes we must be diligent in supporting human freedom and opposing those enemies who would strip others of their dignity.

As president, John McCain will promote religious freedom, combat human trafficking and protect women and children. These are issues that demand presidential leadership. We must confront the evils in this world that deny human freedom and degrade human dignity. America was founded on the belief in the inherent dignity of all human life and this dignity can only be preserved through shared respect and responsibility. The McCain Update - April 25, 2008

We are running a different kind of campaign because John McCain is a different kind of candidate. This week, he traveled to some of the forgotten areas of our nation. From rural Alabama to hurricane-ravaged Louisiana, many places across the country have been ignored and left behind. As president, John McCain will change that and will ensure that impoverished areas are not only remembered and helped, but are rebuilt to be stronger and prosper.

On Monday, John McCain traveled to Selma, Gee's Bend and Thomasville, Alabama to begin his weeklong It's Time for Action Tour.

In Selma, John McCain visited the Edmund Pettus Bridge, which in 1965 was the scene of a seminal moment in the Civil Rights Movement. He then traveled to Gee's Bend, which has been isolated by a river, economic difficulties and racial tensions over the years.

He then journeyed on to Thomasville where he talked about the need for education and its importance to rural development. Click here to learn more about these areas.

Below is an excerpt from John McCain's speech in Selma on Monday:

"There must be no forgotten places in America, whether they have been ignored for long years by the sins of indifference and injustice, or have been left behind as the world grew smaller and more economically interdependent. In America, we have always believed that if the day was a disappointment, we would win tomorrow."

On Tuesday, John McCain went to Youngstown, Ohio to discuss the economic challenges facing the area and solutions for a brighter future.

In Youngstown, John McCain visited Fabart Inc., a heavy metal fabricating facility that shut down after struggling in Chapter 11 status. John McCain then held a Town Hall meeting at Youngstown State University (YSU).

His final stop of the day was at Fire Line Inc., a company that works with YSU to develop and place students in advanced manufacturing and technical jobs. Click here to learn more about Youngstown.

On Wednesday, John McCain visited Inez, Kentucky to discuss the challenge of poverty in America and how it affects rural communities. In Inez, John McCain participated in a town hall meeting at the Old Martin County Courthouse. This historic community faces many economic challenges, particularly struggling with poverty. During this event, John McCain highlighted a student-mentoring program that encourages students in Eastern Kentucky to finish their education and serve their local communities.

"We all have choices to make in our lives, and you don't expect government to make yours for you. But you have a right to expect that the people you elect to office will help and not hinder your efforts to make a better future for your community and families. You have a right to expect us to show as much concern for helping you create more and better choices to make for yourselves as we show any other community in America or we show the special interests who claim so much of Washington's attention."

On Thursday, John McCain went to Louisiana to discuss the role of the federal government in preparing, assisting and recovering from calamities such as Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
In New Orleans, John McCain took a walking tour of the 9th Ward and went to Xavier University, the nation's only predominately black Roman Catholic university. John McCain visited with Xavier President Dr. Norman Francis, a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and university dignitaries before holding a town hall meeting. Women of the Storm, a non-partisan alliance of Louisiana women who in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita educated elected officials about the urgent needs of those affected, participated in the town hall.
Below is an excerpt from John McCain's speech on Thursday:

"Katrina and its aftermath were a moment of truth for our federal government, requiring focused action and immediate, effective aid. What we saw instead was the confusion, inefficiency, and poor judgment that trouble many agencies of government every day, when no one's paying close attention. We need to make government far more transparent in its way of doing business ... more accountable for its day-to-day decisions and expenditures ... and in every way more responsive to the people it serves."

Today, John McCain will continue his It's Time for Action Tour in Little Rock, Arkansas. On the fifth day of his tour, he is visiting communities where hope, innovation and local solutions are helping to lift these communities up. John McCain will visit Arkansas Baptist College where he will address a class of college students. Arkansas Baptist College, founded in 1884, is the only black Baptist higher education institution west of the Mississippi River.

The college is committed "to the development of graduates who are exceptionally educated, spiritually and culturally aware, and able to meet the demands of our rapidly advancing society." This is a four-year college offering degrees in business administration, human services, criminal justice, public administration and religious studies.
