PHOENIX, AZ -- U.S. Senator John McCain’s re-election campaign today released a new web video, called “So Wrong It’s Scary,” focusing on Congressman J.D. Hayworth’s statement this week that Senator McCain would be worse for America as president than Barack Obama.

To recap: Appearing in Phoenix on Tuesday night, Congressman Hayworth took his desperation to a new level, telling a group that America would have been worse off if Senator McCain had won the 2008 presidential election. According to The Associated Press, Hayworth told the gathering that while he’s not a fan of President Obama, “I think the last thing we needed was a progressive trying to wear a Republican cloth coat as President of the United States.”

Congressman Hayworth’s comments obviously did not play well with the conservative talk radio hosts at his former employer, 550 KFYI. Hayworth called into KFYI on Wednesday to angrily deny the story, and “didn't even bother to say hello” before launching into an unbalanced-sounding rant in which he accused the McCain campaign, KFYI and The Associated Press of somehow colluding to attack him. However, Hayworth refused to answer KFYI host Barry Markson’s central question about whether he actually believes Senator McCain would be worse for the nation than Barack Obama.

PHOENIX, AZ – U.S. Senator John McCain’s re-election campaign today released its latest web video, “An Officer and a… Lobbyist?” The video responds to Congressman J.D. Hayworth’s strange and offensive comparison of his record as a corporate lobbyist to Sen. McCain’s uniformed military service to our country in the United States Navy.

Last Tuesday, after the McCain campaign revealed Congressman Hayworth’s secret past as a lobbyist in TV and radio ads, the Hayworth campaign responded by bizarrely equating Congressman Hayworth’s stint as a professional Washington lobbyist for a Florida company to Sen. McCain’s uniformed service as Navy Liaison to the U.S. Senate.

The Hayworth campaign put out a statement from spokesman Mark Sanders that read in part,

“Remember [McCain] began his career in Washington as a lobbyist when he was appointed in 1976 as the Navy's liaison to the United States Senate. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black…”

Sanders again accused Sen. McCain of being a “lobbyist” in an interview with Fox 10 Phoenix later that day. And Congressman Hayworth himself repeated the charge in an interview with radio station 101.1 WZTK in North Carolina.

Of course, Congressman Hayworth’s accusation is more than absurd -- it’s demonstrably untrue.

It is quite simply illegal for active duty military personnel to register to lobby. As Navy liaison to the Senate, Sen. McCain was a commissioned officer, not a lobbyist.

Upon release of the new web video, McCain 2010 Communications Director Brian Rogers released the following statement:

“We know Congressman Hayworth never served our country in uniform, but you’d think he’d be smart enough to know that ‘lobbyist’ isn’t a rank in the United States Navy. Hayworth’s bizarre comparison of his stint as a corporate lobbyist to Sen. McCain’s military service is both pathetic and desperate. But no matter how hard the Hayworth campaign flails, they won’t distract voter from the fact that there’s only one Washington lobbyist on the ballot this August, and that’s J.D. Hayworth.”

Earlier this month, with the defeat of Rep. Alan Mollohan in West Virginia and Sen. Bob Bennett in Utah, the American people sent Washington a powerful message: Stop the wasteful earmark spending!



This is a message that should make Congressman Hayworth very nervous.

During his 12 years in Washington, Congressman Hayworth was an “avid earmarker” who played the Washington pork game -- requesting his own earmarks and voting for everyone else’s -- a practice that has bloated our budget, bankrupted our children’s future and landed Members of Congress in jail for the corruption it breeds.

Congressman Hayworth was part of the problem in Washington, voting for billions of dollars in wasteful earmark spending that Sen. John McCain voted against.

McCAIN CAMPAIGN RELEASES NEW WEB VIDEO, “BORDER SECURITY”

PHOENIX, AZ -- U.S. Senator John McCain’s re-election campaign today released a new web video, called “Border Security,” highlighting the McCain-Kyl Border Security Action Plan.

The web video features Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, who strongly backs the McCain-Kyl plan, saying, “They key point of
Senator McCain’s plan is to secure the border ... This is going to work, and this is what we actually need.”

McCain-Kyl Border Security Action Plan:

1.) Immediately deploy 3,000 National Guard Troops along the Arizona/Mexico border, along with appropriate surveillance platforms, which shall remain in place until the Governor of Arizona certifies, after consulting with state, local and tribal law enforcement, that the Federal Government has achieved operational control of the border. Permanently add 3,000 Custom and Border Protection Agents to the Arizona/Mexico border by 2015.

2.) Fully fund and support Operation Streamline in Arizona’s two Border Patrol Sectors to, at a minimum, ensure that repeat illegal border crossers go to jail for 15 to 60 days. Where Operation Streamline has been implemented, the number of illegal crossings has decreased significantly. Require the Obama Administration to complete a required report detailing the justice and enforcement resources needed to fully fund this program. Fully reimburse localities for any related detention costs.

3.) Provide $100M, an increase of $40M, for Operation Stonegarden, a program that provides grants and reimbursement to Arizona’s border law enforcement for additional personnel, overtime, travel and other related costs related to illegal immigration and drug smuggling along the border.

4.) Offer Hardship Duty Pay to Border Patrol Agents assigned to rural, high-trafficked areas, such as the CBP Willcox and Douglas Stations in the Tucson Sector

5.) Complete the 700 miles of fencing along the border with Mexico and construct double- and triple- layer fencing at appropriate locations along the Arizona-Mexico border.

6.) Substantially increase the 25 mobile surveillance systems and three Predator B Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in place today along the Arizona/Mexico border and ensure the border patrol has the resources necessary to operate the UAVs 24 hours a day seven days a week. Send additional fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters to the Arizona-Mexico Border.

7.) Increase funding for vital radio communications and interoperability between CBP and state, local, and tribal law enforcement to assist in apprehensions along the border.

8.) Provide funding for additional Border Patrol stations in the Tucson Sector and explore the possibility of an additional Border Patrol sector for Arizona. Create six additional permanent Border Patrol Forward Operating Bases, and provide funding to upgrade the existing bases to include modular buildings, electricity and potable water. Complete construction of the planned permanent checkpoint in Arizona. Deploy additional temporary roving checkpoints and increase horse patrols throughout the Tucson Sector.

9.) Require the Federal government to fully reimburse state and local governments for the costs of incarcerating criminal aliens. Start by at least funding the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP) at its authorized level of $950 million.

10.) Place one full-time Federal Magistrate in Cochise County and provide full funding for and authorization of the Southwest Border Prosecution Initiative to reimburse state, county, tribal, and municipal governments for costs associated with the prosecution and pre-trial detention of federally-initiated criminal cases declined by local offices of the United States Attorneys.
