Schilling Jumps Aboard McCain's GOP Bandwagon - Stumps with McCain today in NH!

Red Sox hurler Curt Schilling is hopping aboard the Straight Talk Express to make his pitch for Sen. John McCain's bid for the White House. During a telephone interview Monday, the politically outspoken World Series hero told The Telegraph he's supporting McCain's presidential campaign because the Arizona Republican is "a man of principal, honor, respect, and loyalty."

"Those aren't commodities that I've seen much of in the White House, at least
during my lifetime,"

said Schilling, who is scheduled to appear with McCain at a town hall-style forum at the Derryfield School in Manchester on Wednesday night.

Schilling has a personal connection with the senator, whom he first met during his 2000-2002 stint with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He said he's supporting McCain because he trusts his character, which he considers more important than agreeing with all of the candidate's views on the issues. "At the end of the day, the perfect candidate does not exist," said Schilling.

"So I'm going with the candidate who I know that,
two, four years after the election, is going to be the same guy as when I voted
for him. "I feel like I know him well enough, and that I know that every
decision he makes will be for the greater good of the country, and not special
interests."

Schilling said he considered supporting another Republican candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, "but at the end of the day, my belief has been in John McCain.

We're in a bad place right now as a country, and I need someone I can trust to do what needs to be done."

This is not Schilling's first foray into presidential politics. In the wake of Red Sox' 2004 World Series win, Schilling took heat in the blue Bay State when he campaigned for President Bush, over Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry."I've never gotten more negative feedback in my life," said Schilling, an independent voter who claims to "despise" political labels. "We are at a time and place in this country, where it seems like everyone is voting for the candidate they dislike the least, and that's a bad place to be," said Schilling.

On the Iraq war, Schilling pointed to McCain's Naval experience, adding that the former Vietnam veteran and prisoner of war "has the right perspective of how the war is supposed to end, and when it should end.

"Yes I am supporting Senator McCain. Please don’t come here and scream about past comments or mistakes as if you’re revealing never before seen or heard information. There is not a candidate alive, today, or in the past, that hasn’t made mistakes or misspoken. It happens, it will continue to happen. I recognize that and am more than ok with it. Yes I have bias in that I know him, but I also know some of the other candidates as well.

I will tell you one thing. The Senator is the first politician who I’ve ever agreed to endorse and potentially campaign with that has NOT asked me to speak from something canned or created by his staff. While that might be a mistake on their part, it speaks to him as a person. He’s real, he’s human. He’s made mistakes and as I stated before I don’t agree with everything he says or does. I would argue that you’d be lying if you said you were in 100% agreement with any candidate in that sense.

I’m not left wing or right wing or center, hell I don’t know what those things really mean! I know what I believe. I know what my stance is. I am Pro-life, but I also think that decision is WAY beyond any one person to control or decide on. I am for the right to bear arms, but haven’t we as a nation made it clear we have not, and cannot police ourselves? How is it that 13 year old children can bring guns into OUR schools? How does that happen? Who the hell needs to OWN an automatic weapon? Seriously? Who? For what? I don’t hunt, but a bunch of my teammates do, and I get that, but I have yet to see an animal that can only be brought down by a weapon that shoots 1100 rounds a minute…

We need much stricter laws when it comes to who can and cannot purchase a fire arm. Why is an extended waiting period and legitimate background check such an issue? I don’t think that would solve our problems when it comes to crimes involving firearms but it sure as hell couldn’t hurt could it? Taxes? Honestly I could care less. I would prefer to pay less in taxes, wouldn’t anyone? But I’ll pay what the government says I have to pay to live here. Less is better but in the end it is what it is. I am all for increased spending for salaries of teachers, police and fireman, I am all for increased salaries of public servants. I am 100% against the bureaucracy and political agendas being at the forefront of how our politicians do their jobs.

I want someone in office that WILL look out for
America first. Whether you agree with me or not isn’t relevant, it’s my belief
that the time is now to elect a man/woman into the office of President that is,
and has been, a true American from day one. Someone with values and beliefs that
won’t stray from those to make the ‘right’ or ‘popular’ decision. I guess I am
looking for someone that I trust, someone with the integrity and honesty I would
want to protect my family were I not here. That person, in this next election,
is John McCain to me.

Curt Schilling really gets it. There were many in MA who was hoping that Schilling would run as the GOP nominee for US Senate vs John Kerry. Schilling would be a breath of fresh air. But since he signed a new contract with the Red Sox, looks like politics is on hold for the short term.

"Along those lines, something I am sure will generate irrational and short sighted responses, is my support in the upcoming election of Senator McCain. I’ve had ample time to do the research I felt I needed to do and while I think I am in favor of many of the issues he stands for/against, it still all boils down to the fact that over the last 8 years of our lives Shonda and I have gotten to know he and his wife. At the end of the day, I trust this man. I know, regardless of my opinions, or outside pressures, that this man will stick to his guns, and be himself, regardless of pressure from outside influences.


Add to the fact that for the first time in awhile we have a true American hero running for our nations highest office. That matters to me, a lot. This man was a POW during the Vietnam war, and when his family background was uncovered he was given the ability to be set free by his captors. The only condition was that he had to sign documents that basically absolved the Vietnamese of any wrong doing and reflected poorly on the U.S. and its involvement.


He flat out said no. Has anyone else running in this election had a character test of this magnitude? Even close? Of all the candidates that might have been tested, how did they fare?

Rather than get released and sent home to his family, he made the decision to remain with his men, his brothers. Awesome stuff. That’s not the only reason he’ll get my vote, but it for damn sure makes me feel good about the integrity, honor, loyalty and sacrifice that this man will make.


At the end of the day, when you think about who you want to be your president, is there ANY issue our President will reside over, decide on, that is more important than those traits? Senator McCain possesses those in spades, and that’s a big deal to me.


I also wanted to add a link to something for two reasons.

1) I don’t want to elect someone, or hope we don’t, in either party, because regardless of their values, stances or beliefs they represent the ‘best chance’ to beat the other parties candidate.


2) I hope voting for ‘the best PERSON’ becomes something meaningful over the next year. We are a country in massive amounts of turmoil. We need someone to lead us that is truly a LEADER. A leader by character and design and not because they’re elected to lead.
