Matt Salmon and I had our first debate on Monday. It was sponsored by the Red Mountain Tea Party, and was a spirited debate between two people who love their country.
We are two different men with different sets of experiences.
I have been a small business owner for the past decade and served as speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives. Mr. Salmon has been in politics for the past 25 years and had a successful career as a contract lobbyist in Washington.
While I appreciate Mr. Salmon’s service, I simply do not believe we can make the necessary changes by electing another Washington insider who has grown accustomed to the culture that created the current mess.
During his service in the state legislature in the early 1990's, Mr. Salmon sponsored and helped pass WIC welfare for moms. As a U.S.
Congressman, Mr. Salmon voted to increase Medicare funding and promised to bring prescription drugs to the masses.
These promises were in vogue during the 1990's and early 2000's, when many Republicans thought that reckless spending was "compassionate conservatism".
That brand of conservatism is no longer in vogue because we have learned that excessive spending and big government does not solve problems.
That is why in Arizona we stood up to ObamaCare, balanced the budget and cut $3 billion in government spending. I believe we need a new generation of leaders to take on Washington, not more of the same.
I look forward to taking on that challenge and serving the people of Arizona. Please view the excerpt of Monday night’s debate that is linked here.
Thank you.
