An Open Letter to "Conservatives" Outside AZ Regarding Joe Arpaio

Dear "Conservative" that lives outside of Arizona,

There has been some minor buzz lately from some of you regarding a potential U.S. Senate run for Maricopa County Sherriff Joe Arpaio.

I have a humble request.

Please shut the hell up. You don't know what you're talking about.

A Joe Arpaio run for Senate would be disastrous for Arizona. You'll note that all of the buzz comes either from out of state, or from people who are on the Sheriff's payroll. Those of us who live here have a vastly different opinion.

I understand your confusion on the matter. You hear him on the radio and you think "pink underwear... bologna for prisoners... this guy is pretty cool. I wish we had a Sheriff Joe around here."

But if you lived here, even for a short amount of time, you'd understand that you really don't. You want the idea of Joe Arpaio- a tough southwestern "take no shit" Sheriff that reminds you of the old days of law enforcement. You may even want the Sheriff Joe of 15 years ago.

But you don't want the reality, which consists of endless lawsuits, politically motivated investigations of any and all potential opponents, and endless grandstanding. If you investigated the matter, you'd understand that you don't want today's Sheriff Joe to do anything, except gracefully ride off into retirement.

Joe pops up from time-to-time and threatens for higher office. (In 2010 it was a run for Governor.) It helps him feed his insatiable ego. Thankfully, we've been spared that reality. But I'm afraid that if enough of you are fooled one of these times he might actually do it, and we really don't want that.

Jeff Flake will make a great U.S. Senator from Arizona. Please focus your attention there instead.

That is all.

Thank you.
