Director of Communications


PHOENIX – Governor Jan Brewer today announced her appointment of Matthew Benson as her Director of Communications. Paul Senseman, her previous spokesman, will return to his former Phoenix public affairs firm, Policy Development Group.

“Mr. Benson possesses keen insight and familiarity with state government which will be invaluable during these challenging times,” said Governor Brewer. “He is a talented, energetic, and capable professional who is extremely well-liked around the State Capitol. He is a very welcome addition to my senior leadership team.”

Mr. Benson will serve as chief spokesperson for Governor Brewer and will guide strategic communications operations for the Governor’s Office. For the past year, Matthew has been Director of Communications and Public Outreach at the Office of Secretary of State Ken Bennett. Prior to his service for Secretary Bennett, Matthew was a lead political reporter for The Arizona Republic for five years. He additionally was a lead political reporter at the Colorado State Capitol for the Fort Collins Coloradoan.


Mr. Benson received his Bachelor of Science in Journalism from Colorado State University.


“I am deeply grateful to Paul for his willingness to serve his state and my Administration for the past two years," said Governor Brewer. “He is a man of great talents, but also of integrity and faith. He has been a treasured member of my executive team, and Arizona is better for his devoted service. I have to say there is some real sadness in me and among his colleagues that his daily presence on the 9th Floor will soon be ending, but we all are happy that Paul is staying involved in public affairs and will continue to be a friend, both personally and professionally.”
