The Arizona Republic Endorses Senator John McCain For Re-Election

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

The Arizona Republic Endorses Senator John McCain For Re-Election

“John McCain has served in the Senate on behalf of Arizonans with great distinction. While he has been embroiled at the center of controversial issues in that time -- the Iraq war, immigration reform and campaign-finance reform, to name but a few -- most Arizonans recognize the essential heart of McCain's role in all those great national and world debates: He was at the center of them. And we expect he will continue to be at the center of the great political arguments of our time. That he will lead and set the terms of debate.” -- Arizona Republic Editorial

A number of pointed realities got lost this summer in the noise of a very loud Republican Senate primary race.
One is fairly obvious: That John McCain has served in the Senate on behalf of Arizonans with great distinction.

While he has been embroiled at the center of controversial issues in that time - the Iraq war, immigration reform and campaign-finance reform, to name but a few - most Arizonans recognize the essential heart of McCain's role in all those great national and world debates: He was at the center of them.

And we expect he will continue to be at the center of the great political arguments of our time. That he will lead and set the terms of debate.

We all may not subscribe to his positions. McCain, a Republican, has infuriated, and will continue infuriating, lots of voters of all political stripes, whether he considers himself a "maverick" or not. But he is an acknowledged leader in the "world's greatest deliberative body," and with the blessing of Arizona voters, he should continue as such.

Also obscured in a contentious primary contest focusing on border issues was the senator's steadiest political principle, his fiscal conservatism. In a time of stratospheric deficits and great economic instability, few principles may prove more vital.

The Arizona Republic recommends Arizona voters return John McCain to the U.S. Senate for a fifth term.
