AZ REPUBLICAN CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATES UPDATE SEPT 7, 2010

Capitol Hill staffers vote Flake most scandal-free

Rep. Jeff Flake cleaned up this year in Washingtonian magazine's 2010 "Best & Worst of Congress" issue.

That's the long-running feature in which Capitol Hill staff members vote for their lawmaker bosses in various offbeat and sometimes-unflattering categories. Longtime readers will remember that former Rep. J.D. Hayworth, R-Ariz., would frequently turn up in the magazine as one of the House's "biggest windbags."

Flake, though, clearly has charmed the rank-and-file press secretaries, legislative directors and other Hill aides who fill out the Washingtonian survey. The Arizona Republican, who has earned national notice by fighting for earmark reform, placed first in the 435-member House in two categories:

"Least Likely to Star in a Scandal" and "Lobbyists' Enemy." He finished third in the categories of "Gym Rat" and male "Hottie" (tying with Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., for the latter distinction).

Raul Grijalva: Even a Blind Squirrel Finds a Nut Once in a While

In response to criticisms leveled by television personality Glenn Beck regarding his relationship with avowed socialist Dolores Huerta, Rep. Raul Grijalva said that he's "not just running against a Republican in our district, we're running against a philosophy." Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while. For once, Raul Grijalva's absolutely right.

Ruth McCLung's philosophy of smaller, less intrusive federal government, job creation, personal responsibility and fiscal
conservatism stands in stark contrast to Mr. Grijalva's spend-and-borrow, entitlement-based socialist policies

Ruth McClung wants create jobs and grow the economy. Raul Grijalva wants to boycott the State of Arizona

Ruth McClung wants to balance the budget and eliminate the federal debt. Raul Grijalva wants another multi-billion dollar stimulus package.

Ruth McClung wants to unite Americans. Raul Grijalva wants to tear them apart.

At a 2006 speech in front of students at Tucson High Magnet School, a speech she was brought to by a Grijalva staffer, Dolores Huerta praised brutal Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez before going on to say that her motto of the day was "Republicans hate Latinos, Ok? Republicans hate Latinos."

Mr. Grijalva has responded by saying that he didn't agree with everything she said that day, and that he didn't think "all Republicans hate all Latinos" (The italics are his).

"Which part, exactly, of Ms. Huerta's hate-filled, socialist rhetoric did he agree with?" asked Ruth McClung. "And when he says that not 'all Republicans hate all Latinos', isn't the inference that most Republicans hate most Latinos? "

"While Mr. Grijalva has always been quick to pull the race card in any debate, this kind of stereotypical categorization of Republicans as bigots is wildly inaccurate, divisive, and serves only to mask
the real issue-Mr. Grijalva's refusal to support Arizonans and jobs over party and ideology."

"You bet this race is about philosophies," McClung continued, "my philosophy of job growth and intelligent solutions versus my opponent's philosophy of boycotts and government handouts."
