John McCain, JD Hayworth pulling no punches in race By Dan Nowicki - The Arizona Republic

The all-out battle between Sen. John McCain and former Rep. J.D. Hayworth in this year's Republican primary looks like it will stay bitter to the bitter end.

Up in the polls and with early voting already under way, McCain is continuing to show Hayworth little mercy.

On Monday, McCain unleashed a new television commercial highlighting Hayworth's links to corrupt Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff, a relationship that contributed to Hayworth's defeat in 2006. Hayworth has denounced the ad as "demonstrably false."

Hayworth likewise is trying to inflict maximum damage on McCain before primary polls close on Aug. 24. He is on the air with his hardest-hitting TV ad yet, charging that McCain is lying when he says he never supported "amnesty" for illegal immigrants. A McCain spokesman called the ad dishonest.

But for all the ongoing sound and fury, McCain appears headed into the home stretch in far better shape than many expected earlier this year amid widespread speculation that the four-term incumbent and 2008 presidential nominee was vulnerable in a political climate marked by "tea party" hostility toward Washington incumbents. Three recent statewide polls show McCain leading by 20 percentage points to 45 percentage points.
