TOM HORNE CRITICIZES STATE DEPT. OFFICIAL FOR BOWING TO HUGO CHAVEZ'S CRITICISM OF S.B. 1070

HORNE CRITICIZES STATE DEPT. OFFICIAL FOR BOWING TO HUGO CHAVEZ'S CRITICISM OF S.B. 1070

Republican Attorney General candidate Tom Horne is criticizing U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg for a federal court document Steinberg filed claiming that S.B. 1070 should be pre-empted and rendered unenforceable by the U.S. government because the law antagonizes foreign governments, including Venezuela dictator Hugo Chavez.

"I am outraged that an official of the United States government would file a declaration in federal court that claims a law passed by the citizens of Arizona should be prevented from being enforced
because leaders of foreign governments - like Venezuela dictator Hugo Chavez - are opposed to it," Horne said.

"The declaration states that S.B. 1070 'antagonizes foreign governments... making them less willing to ... support (the U.S.) across a broad range of foreign policy issues.'" Horne added, "The document also cites the opposition to S.B. 1070 by the likes of Evo Morales of Bolivia and Nicaragua's Daniel Ortega. I am mystified as to why the State Department is more concerned about their socialist views than it is about the security and sovereignty of the United States."
