Back in 2005, a News 4 investigation showed kids crossing the border in Lukeville and boarding buses for Ajo.
State Superintendent Tom Horne said years later he found nothing being done about it. He ordered an audit and found from 2007 to 2009 the Ajo School District illegally spent $1.2 million of tax payer money. Now Horne is demanding the district pay the money back.
Horne said he sent an auditor down and found students claiming residency in uninhabitable trailers, vacant RV spaces, and an abandoned hotel in Lukeville.
He totaled the cost up to $1.2 million, a huge chunk of the district's budget; money it could soon have to pay back.
Horne said, "Their annual budget is roughly 4 million dollars a year so this will be a strong lesson to other districts and charter schools that they should not be admitting students that are residents of Mexico and charging the state for the cost of that.
