At a news conference at Casa Grande City Hall, Sheriff Paul Babeu said his staff was "still trying to connect the dots" after 53-year-old Deputy Louie Puroll was shot and wounded Friday evening while on patrol in the desert south of Phoenix.
Puroll, a 15-year veteran, was working alone and told authorities that he was tracking footprints and a stash of marijuana bales near Interstate 8 when he spotted armed smugglers ahead of him. The deputy called for backup but said he was soon fired upon by an AK47-armed smuggler who had circled around for an ambush.
