SEN DAVE BRASWELL strongly oppose organized activities highlighting alternative life styles in our Public Schools

Dear LD 6 Voters:

On April 16th, many schools throughout the valley, including some Glendale Union High School District High Schools, is allowing a “Day of Silence” to occur to promote awareness of Gays, Lesbians, Bi-sexuals and Transgenders. A search on Google reveals that, “On the National Day of Silence hundreds of thousands of students nationwide take a vow of silence to bring attention to anti-Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender, name-calling, bullying and harassment in their schools.”

I do not support harassment of anyone regardless of their beliefs in our public schools. Furthermore, I do not support requiring all students to acknowledge a lifestyle that is offensive to thousands of students and their parents.

I strongly oppose organized activities highlighting alternative life styles in our Public Schools. Our children attending our publically financed schools in accordance with state and federal law are
mandated to attend school or risk loss of academic credit. These children are a captured audience attending our public schools and are being exploited by adults. I consider this an affront to a child’s right to attend a public school free from beliefs that create a hostile learning environment for those that are offended by this coordinated alternative life style suggestion. No one should ever be required to acknowledge the existence of a belief that is offensive.

A day of silence to promote awareness of the harmful effects of bullying, name-calling, and harassment of others is all our children should be exposed to in our public schools.
