Franks Opposes Medicare Cuts, Says H.R. 3200 Will Hurt Seniors

October 28, 2009 - Congressman Trent Franks today released the following statement criticizing the Democrats' health care proposal's harmful effects on the health care coverage of senior citizens across the country:‬‪‬‪

"In the middle of a discussion over how we should go about assisting our nation's uninsured, it is highly ironic that Democrats are talking about cutting coverage to those who need it the most -- our nation's senior citizens!‬‪

"There are countless negative effects that would be brought about by the Democrats' misguided health care proposal. One of the more distressing negatives is the $500 million cut to the Medicare Advantage program. Within my district alone, nearly 70,000 senior citizens would see drastic changes to their health care coverage, as a result of these cuts.‬‪

"Furthermore, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has reported that the Democrats' legislation would cause Medicare premiums to rise by 50% and would lead to a nearly 20% raise in
seniors' prescription drug premiums by 2019. This is Democrats' idea of 'improving' our health care system.‬‪‬‪

"Democrats have not allowed our Republican healthcare reform bills to even be heard, but Republicans will not be silent when they try to cut the coverage of senior citizens who have already spent the majority of their lives contributing to this nation and need the coverage now, more than ever. It is completely inexcusable, and should have no place in any health care proposal considered by this Congress."‬‪‬‪

Congressman Franks is serving his fourth term in the U.S. House of Representatives, and is a member of the Committee on Armed Services, Strategic Forces Subcommittee, Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee, Military Readiness Subcommittee, Committee on the Judiciary, Constitution Subcommittee, and is Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law.
