Stimulus Watch: Stimulus Funds Go To Government Agency With History Of Incompetence

Two Weeks Ago, GAO Warned About Lack Of Oversight When It Comes To Keeping Track Of Stimulus Money. “The report raises concerns about how states and the federal governments will report back on how the stimulus money is spent. The Office of Management and Budget has provided some guidance on how to report the information, but auditors suggest that the states will require more information.”(Ed O’Keefe, “Eye Opener: Economic Stimulus Report,” The Washington Post’s “Federal Eye” Blog, 7/8/09)

What Would GAO Say About Agency Now Handling Stimulus Funds With Record “Spending Money Inappropriately?” LISA MYERS: “The good news is that the Obama stimulus package dedicates almost $3 billion to get broadband to rural areas. The bad news is that the money is being handled by the Rural Utility Service, an agency which critics say has a history of mismanagement and incompetence in this area.” JOEL KELSEY, Consumers Union Policy Analyst: “Over the last seven years, this agency has a legacy of spending money inappropriately, being slow to get money out the door to places that need it.” (NBC’s “Nightly News,” 7/20/09)

Meanwhile, Obama Administration Pushing States To Use Stimulus Funds To Advertise Stimulus. “PennDOT has spent $60,000 to create large green road signs telling motorists that funding was secured by the federal stimulus package … The signs will cost about $2,000 each … Lori Irving, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of Transportation, acknowledged the department strongly encouraged states to use stimulus funding to develop the signs … ‘Personally I think it is ridiculous that any of the stimulus money is used by government entities to make signs,’ said Mike Cupp of Morgantown, W.Va. …’Explain to me how that is stimulating?’” (Selena Zito, “Road Signs Eat Up Part Of Stimulus,”
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, 7/20/09)
