The campaign between Sen. John McCain and Chris Simcox is likely turn into a fight over who’s the real Republican.
While Simcox has questioned McCain’s conservative credentials, turns out the activist has not exactly been a loyal member of the party from which he is now seeking a nod of approval.
Arlen Spector, it appears, isn’t the only one who’s had doubts about the GOP label.
When Simcox first arrived in Arizona and settled in Tombstone in 2002, he wasn’t interested in being a Republican, marking “no party preference,” according to documents buried away in Bisbee.
About a year and a half later, Simcox changed his mind, registering as a “Republican” in 2003. Less than a year after that, he changed again — this time to “independent.”
When Simcox relocated to Phoenix two years later, he stayed with the independent label. It wasn’t until March 2007 when he decided to go back to the GOP, where he’s been since.
And before he ever moved to Arizona, Simcox — who calls himself a “life-long Republican” — was registered in California as an “American Independent” from 1996 until 2000, according to the Los Angeles County Recorder’s Office.
Simcox says the registration history reflects his misgivings about McCain and others in the party.
“It tracks the frustrating experience I think many people have had with the Republican Party over the years,” Simcox said.
But now, he wants Republicans to know that he’s here to stay.
“I saw there was going to be a battle for the direction the party was taking,” Simcox said. “I felt it was time I could trust coming back.”
So is McCain — who Simcox has blasted as too liberal — the real Republican in this race?
Simcox’s says, “This campaign is about Republicans holding a mirror up to themselves and finding out what they’ve become.”
