When Red Sox ace Curt Schilling spoke on behalf of Sen. John McCain in Manchester Wednesday evening, he said something that should resonate with all of us.
He observed that too often elections come down to with candidate we dislike least. "Our country deserves better than that," he said.
Yes it does.
America deserves a candidate - and a President - we can all believe in. This is the greatest nation in the world. It deserves a leader who can restore our faith in America as a nation of great people led by great men. Only John McCain has the proven ability to do that.
At this moment in our history, no one is more capable of uniting this country around its founding principle than John McCain.
"Mr. McCain is such a familiar figure that it is easy to forget how remarkable he is," The Economist magazine wrote last week. How true. Here Republicans have in their stable the most remarkable American politician of his generation, and they are considering nominating lesser candidates who are no more conservative, no more Republican, than the heroic figure they seek to supplant?
Americans hunger for virtuous leadership. They hunger for a President who can restore their trust in government.
They hunger for a politician they can believe and believe in.
They hunger, in other words, for a man like John McCain. (You know it’s true.) And in this race, there simply are no others like him.
"I’m voting for the guy that I know is going to be the same person four years from now that he was when elected," Schilling said. "I need to trust somebody because I don’t agree with anybody’s platform front to back."
