MARICOPA COUNTY ELECTIONS PERMANENT EARLY VOTING LIST "IS PERMANENT"

November 8, 2007 – Phoenix, AZ

The Maricopa County Elections Department will be notifying its electorate that a permanent early voting list is now available to voters who wish to be on such a list. A permanent early voting list was approved by the state legislature (ARS16-544) and is now in effect.

Beginning November 9, 2007, voters will be receiving a notice informing them that the county is establishing the list and the voters can respond to the Election Department if they wish to be included.

Because early voting is in such high demand and more than 50% of the voting in county wide elections in Maricopa is by early balloting, it was apparent that a permanent early voting list had to be established.

In the recent 2007 November jurisdictional elections close to 180,000 requests were received by the Maricopa County Elections Department – compare this to the 2004 Primary Election of almost 133,000 early ballot requests and in the 2006 Primary Elections, Maricopa received close to 141,000.
“We’re very excited about the permanent early
voting list,”
said County Recorder Helen Purcell,
“for we feel it’s long overdue. We have more
than 1.5 million registered voters, registration is constantly increasing, and
many new residents are accustomed to a permanent early voting list. It’s just
another way of further increasing voter turnout and accommodating our
voters.”

On Friday, November 9, 2007 the first mailing will be sent to voters, who regularly vote early, informing them of the establishment of and the invitation to be on the permanent list. The last mailing is slated for November 13, 2007. To comply with ARS16-544B there will be a follow-up mailing by the Elections Department. It is felt that this new procedure will help ease long lines at the early voting satellites as well as the long lines at the polling sites on Election Day.
