John McCain had a busy week meeting with voters in the early primary states of South Carolina and Iowa, attending an open forum in California, and engaging in the ethics debate fighting for real reform in the Senate. Sen. McCain started the week in South Carolina with Town Hall meetings in Greenville, Spartanburg and Aiken before coming to Washington for an event with Young Professionals.
He then traveled to California for a "New Captains of Innovation" open forum at Stanford University before returning to the Senate for the debate on ethics reform legislation. This weekend John McCain will be in Iowa for a Town Hall with voters in Ankeny before a debate Sunday morning on ABC's "This Week" with George Stephanopoulos and house parties in Johnson and Scott counties in Iowa. He will continue campaigning in Iowa with a Town Hall meeting and speech before the Cedar Rapids Rotary before heading to the early primary states of Michigan and New Hampshire.

wide range of topics, and the ease and gusto with which he does it. It's easy
for political figures to seem synthetic in this context, but no one can say that
about McCain."
From The Campaign Trail
Newsweek Says The Packed Room "Room Leapt To Their Feet, Cheering."
"John McCain has been campaigning in New Hampshire for months, but when he took the stage last week at a town-hall meeting in Keene, it felt like a reunion tour.
Journey's 'Don't Stop Believin' pumped on the sound system, and when the onetime GOP presidential front runner arrived, many of the 200 people packed in the room leapt to their feet, cheering. McCain railed against partisanship in Washington and attacked the free-spending ways of his own party.
'It's getting harder to do the work of the Lord in the city of
Satan,'
he said, prompting laughter and applause. A few feet away, a handmade campaign sign hung on the wall: THE MAC IS BACK!" South Carolina ...
The Greenville News Headline Reads "McCain Sticks To His Guns"
"He focused on three issues, 'outrageous' congressional spending and his pledge to nominate conservative, strict constructionist federal judges, but mostly on Iraq." "Without mentioning public opinion polls that have turned sharply against Bush and involvement in Iraq, McCain said he'd 'rather lose a campaign than lose a war.'
" California ... The Stanford Daily reports "Hundreds of guests gathered at the Arrillaga Alumni Center [as] McCain championed green technology, repeatedly called for a smaller government and iterated his hawkish stance on foreign policy."
John McCain At Stanford University
The San Jose Mercury News reported on McCain's views on the American Dream: "For a guy who finished fifth [last] in his class at the Naval Academy, it proves in America that anything is possible."

Sen. McCain Traveled Back To Washington To Debate Ethics Legislation And Fight For Real Ethics Reform
Fighting For Real Ethics Reform
John McCain: "It's a sham, it's a travesty, and we are not getting at the root of the problem, which is the earmarks. We can say that somebody has to wait two years instead of one year before they become a lobbyist and not be able to buy a member of congress a meal. But the heart of the problem and cause of the problem is the earmarks. That's what has caused the corruption. It wasn't free meals that got members of congress in jail, it was the abuse and corruption of the earmarks, and this is not a serious approach to it."
John McCain:
"There is almost no accountability and there is no transparency, when
the majority leader of the Senate is the one who certifies whether there are
earmarks on [a bill] or not is very much akin to putting the fox in charge of
the hen house. We, by a vote of 96 to nothing, had very stringent earmark
identification and elimination [legislation]. Through a very arcane
parliamentary process they threw those out and put in the weakest kinds of
ability for the American people to eliminate what has been clearly a corrupting
influence in Washington. I'm very disappointed and I'm going to fight against
it."

On The Record What They're Saying
South Carolina Voters Tell The Greenville News They Back McCain... "[Jonathan Taylor] a conservative unhappy with the extent of corruption among Republicans, an issue McCain mentioned in his remarks. 'At this point, I might vote for a Democratic centrist,' Taylor said before McCain arrived. Afterward, he said, 'Awesome,' adding a thumbs up gesture."
"Steve Stromberg, who works in real estate and said he voted for McCain in the 2000 primary ... said McCain remains 'impressive' to him. 'He has the experience and that's what matters the most now,' Stromberg said."
The Campaign announced its "National Advisory Committee On Agriculture." New Hampshire Farm Bureau President Wayne Mann: "Senator McCain has been a strong leader who will do what's right for America's farmers and agriculture producers. ... His experience and courageous life story have prepared him to lead this country on day one, and his sound national farm policy will help strengthen our nation's economy."
Ralph Klemme, Former Chairman of the Iowa House Agriculture Committee: "I'm pleased to serve on Senator McCain's advisory team and admire his principled stance against farm policy riddled with waste. We need a president who understands that pet projects benefiting only a few are harmful to the farming and agriculture industry as a whole."
