'It's Great to Be Tempe!' Mayor Hugh Hallman Announces Re-Election Bid, Touts Strong Neighborhoods, Fiscal Stability, Innovative Economic Development
TEMPE, AZ. MAY 9, 2007- After leading the City's turnaround from deficits to fiscal stability and helping to restore Tempe's economic development and civic pride, Mayor Hugh Hallman today announced that he will seek a second term as mayor of Tempe.
The Tempe mayoral primary election will take place in March, 2008.
"Thanks to principled leadership and our success in making city government work better for our residents and business community, there is no question that Tempe has regained its place as the most dynamic, diverse and exceptional city in Arizona," Hallman said. "It's great to be Tempe once again, and that's going to be the focus of our campaign."
Hallman has made good on his 2004 promise to be an "Independent Leader For Our Brightest Future." When Hugh Hallman won office in 2004, many understood that Tempe needed fresh leadership. Tempe had lost the Cardinals, the Super Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl, and the Los Angeles Angels Spring Training. Older neighborhoods were being overrun by deteriorating rental houses, and city coffers were bleeding red ink.
Hallman has overseen a renaissance. With the help of many committed community leaders, Tempe has reclaimed its place as the Valley's hot spot. Tempe has attracted new high-tech businesses, regained the Los Angeles Angels, landed the Insight Bowl, turned landfills into shopping centers without eminent domain, set the pace for historic preservation in Arizona, worked to control rental housing and put more police officers on the street, among many other recent accomplishments. And Tempe's budget deficits have turned to surpluses.
Long-time residents Mike Rooney and Jan Nicpon, the Co-Chairs of Hallman's campaign agreed that Tempe has returned to its place as the leader in the Valley of the Sun. "Hugh Hallman has helped get Tempe's financial house in order and restored pride in our community," Rooney said. "Tempe is on the right track and we need to keep it there with Hugh Hallman."
Hallman is an attorney and life-long Tempean. He and his wife Susan have three sons, Louis, Eli and Marcus.
