"Cautiously Optimistic" About Iraq

Congressman Mike Pence and ABC's Terry McCarthy Give First-Hand Accounts Of Early Signs Of Progress

Congressman Mike Pence explains, "Despite all you see and hear in the media, there is a springtime of hope beginning in Iraq. I saw it on the faces of hundreds of ordinary Iraqis on the streets of Baghdad... "The people impacted me the most. I encountered nothing but warmth and friendship. As we passed shop after shop, people waved, touched their hearts and expressed a greeting in Arabic. Many just said, 'Hello.' Later, when I met with Indiana soldiers, one told me, 'When I go home on R&R, I tell people, "It's nothing like what you see on TV, there's a lot of good happening over here that never gets reported..."'" -Entire story available in USA Today

ABC's Terry McCarthy explains, "Children have come out to play again. Shoppers are back in markets. A few devout souls even venture past the barbed wire to pray. Baghdad is still rocked by car bombs every day. But right in the center of the city, a small area of relative calm is starting to grow, thanks to stepped up U.S. patrols and increased Iraqi checkpoints. Nowhere is safe for Westerners to linger, but over the past week we visited five different neighborhoods where the locals told us life is slowly coming back to normal... At a tea shop, these men actually asked us to film them to show things are getting better." -Watch ABC's "World News" With Charles Gibson

John McCain On Early Progress In Iraq

What we don't read about and what is new is a lot of the good news - the drop in the murders in Baghdad, the establishment of security outposts throughout the city... the deployment of additional Iraqi brigades to Baghdad... "These and other indicators are reasons for very cautious optimism about the effects of the new strategy..." -Entire story available in The Washington Post
