PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. -- Freshman Congressman Ben Quayle is trying to convince voters to send him back to Washington for another term.
“I was hesitant to get into the election last time because my dad did go through it,” Quayle tells 3TV, “Our family went through it.”
Ben Quayle knows it well – politics, that is. His dad, of course, was Vice President.
Quayle recently became a dad himself and he told us that has changed him.
“Anytime you have a child it changes you – she’s got me wrapped around her finger. That happened the day she was born,” said Quayle.
We talked to Congressman Quayle and his wife about what it is like on the campaign trail.
“Now I know what it’s like to have thick skin,” says Tiffany Quayle.
She says it’s been a little tough getting used to her role as the wife of a politician, “I’m proud to say that I’m his wife and he’s a Congressman. But I don’t like that label 'Congressman’s wife.'”
The Quayles now find themselves square in the spotlight as the race for the newly drawn District 6 heats up.
Quayle is doing battle with fellow Republican David Schweikert. Both are incumbents – once allies now rivals.
Mr. Schweikert told 3TV he believes Quayle’s campaign will have to go “viciously negative” and he accuses the Quayle team of running their campaign like “high school sophomores”.
Meantime, Quayle says they set out to focus on the issues that matter to voters in CD6, but says the other side has forced them to respond to attacks.
We asked Mr. Quayle about his promise when he was first elected that he would “go to Washington and knock the hell out of the place.”
He stands by that statement and claims he’s been able to do that, “on a number of fronts like holding Attorney General Eric Holder accountable.”
This was the most pressing issue the day we spoke with Congressman Quayle at his home in Paradise Valley.
He and other Republicans pushed for Attorney General Holder to be held in Contempt of Congress for failing to turn over documents in the Fast and Furious investigation.
The Justice Department has said that it is protecting documents that are sensitive to ongoing investigations.
“I think Agent Terry and his family deserve answers,” says Quayle. “What was the operation and why was it conceived.”
We asked Mr. Quayle about Democrats’ claim that Republicans are playing politics with this investigation. Some, including Nancy Pelosi, have called it shameful.
“She’s wrong on this,” says Congressman Quayle, “We have been so patient with this Attorney General. We have asked so many times nicely to get this information.”
Fast and Furious is just one in a string of Arizona stories that have made national headlines in recent weeks.
But as Ben Quayle campaigns here at home, he talks most about the debt that he fears could be our downfall.
