Quayle, Schweikert Differ Again on National Defense

Dear Friends,

Not long ago David Schweikert boldly called Barack Obama’s payroll tax deal “generational theft” in a national news magazine-- right before he voted for it. This was a daring bit of duplicity even by Washington standards, and he has now followed it with a similar double-cross of the US military and national security apparatus.

On November 2, 2010 Rep. Schweikert said, “In Congress, I will push to make sure that our intelligence agencies, our military, and our state and local law enforcement agencies have every necessary resource to fight...”

But he hasn’t.

Instead, Rep. Schweikert has joined with liberal Democrats to vote against funding those things. Today Rep. Schweikert voted against the final passage of the National Defense Authorization Act, legislation which Congress must pass each year to protect the country.

This isn’t the first time Rep. Schweikert has shown poor judgment on matters of national defense.

Schweikert voted against the Patriot Act—twice.

And voted to cut the U.S. military budget by $8.5 billion-- not exactly the “push” for resources he promised in 2010.

When our troops made a decision to volunteer for service, they entered a solemn agreement with the United States government, and they count on Congress to hold up its end.

This covenant must not be broken in favor of playing to the crowd.
