The war in Iraq may have officially ended, but there are still some in Washington critical of President Obama’s fulfilled promise to bring all American troops home. At the forefront of this criticism is Senator John McCain (R-AZ), who says maintaining a presence in Iraq is essential to maintaining peace there.

“I think it’s well to point out that the president has never acknowledged that the surge succeeded,” he told Martha MacCallum Thursday morning.

“There are still big problems in Iraq and a residual force there of around 20,000 would have ensured and continued the progress that needs to be made,” he said. “We’re putting at risk all that loss of blood and treasure because of what I believe, political reasons.”

McCain went on to comment about his Twitter relationship with Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, in which the two have been going back and forth about uprisings and demonstrations in Russia.
