Poll: Flake leads Cardon by 48 points in GOP Senate race
Arizona's Senate primary races are just starting to rev up, but Rep. Jeff Flake already has a crushing lead over his Republican opponents, according to an independent new automated poll from Magellan Strategies.
Flake, who was the first Republican candidate to announce for the retiring Sen. Jon Kyl's seat, tops the GOP field with 52 percent support. An unnamed generic candidate finished a distant second with 8 percent. Mesa investor Wil Cardon, who embarked on a statewide campaign tour earlier this week and generally is considered Flake's main rival, clocked in with just 4 percent. Radio host Clair "Van" Van Steenwyk of Buckeye followed with 2 percent. Douglas McKee, a conservative Fort Mohave general contractor, and former Youngtown Mayor Bryan Hackbarth each had 1 percent. Another 32 percent remains undecided.
The Cardon campaign predicted that Cardon's numbers will improve as Arizona voters get to know him.
“This poll isn’t surprising seeing as Wil just formally launched his campaign this past week," said Katie Martin, a Cardon spokeswoman. "Wil isn't a career politician like Congressman Jeff Flake who has been in Washington for over a decade."
Magellan Strategies polled the telephone land lines of 722 likely Arizona Republican primary voters and independent voters who intend to vote in the state's GOP primary. The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 3.64 percentage points.

I read on one conservative blog that Cardon has lined up most of the Republican Party leadership. In some states's that would be a good thing but we saw how much help it was to Former Senate President Russell Pearce. Mike Triggs
