Declaring “justice has been done,” President Obama announced late Sunday that Usama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces in Pakistan, marking the end of the worldwide manhunt that began nearly a decade ago on Sept. 11, 2001.


The president made the stunning announcement within hours of informing congressional leaders. The U.S. had been waiting for the results of a DNA test to confirm his identity before going public.

President confirms U.S. forces killed Al Qaeda leader






 
Former President Bush released the following statement shortly after President Obama spoke tonight:

"Earlier this evening, President Obama called to inform me that American forces killed Usama bin Laden, the leader of the al Qaeda network that attacked America on September 11, 2001.

 
I congratulated him and the men and women of our military and intelligence communities who devoted their lives to this mission. They have our everlasting gratitude.

 
This momentous achievement marks a victory for America, for people who seek peace around the world, and for all those who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001. The fight against terror goes on, but tonight America has sent an unmistakable message: No matter how long it takes, justice will be done."!







STATEMENT BY SENATOR JOHN McCAIN ON THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT OSAMA BIN LADEN HAS BEEN KILLED

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.), made the following statement this evening regarding the announcement made by President Obama that Usama Bin Laden has been killed:


 
“I am overjoyed that we finally got the world's top terrorist. The world is a better and more just place now that Usama bin Laden is no longer in it. I hope the families of the victims of the September 11th attacks will sleep easier tonight and every night hence knowing that justice has been done. I commend the President and his team, as well as our men and women in uniform and our intelligence professionals, for this superb achievement.

 
“But while we take heart in the news that Usama bin Laden is dead, we must be mindful that al-Qaeda and its terrorist allies are still lethal and determined enemies, and we must remain vigilant to defeat them.”







Congressman Jeff Flake Releases Statement on Death of Osama Bin Laden

Mesa, Arizona – Republican Congressman Jeff Flake, who represents Arizona’s Sixth District, tonight reacted to the announcement that Osama Bin Laden was killed.
“For all of us with vivid and painful memories of the morning of September 11th, nearly a decade later, this is wonderful news," said Flake. "We need to continue to be vigilant when it comes to terrorism, but this is an important victory. Kudos to our military and intelligence services for their tireless work over a number of years to bring about this result.”
