Jeff Flake Senate Bid Raises $1 Million in First Quarter By Kyle Trygstad - Roll Call

April 4, 2011, 4:26 p.m.

Republican Rep. Jeff Flake’s Senate campaign announced Monday that it will report raising more than $1 million in the first quarter and some $1.5 million in cash on hand.

The hefty sum could dismay potential Senate contenders in Arizona from both parties looking to replace outgoing Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R). Democrats have indicated they plan to target the Republican-leaning state, but so far no contenders have stepped forward.

“Our tremendous finance committee includes most of Arizona’s hardest-working Republicans, and we couldn’t be happier with the strong showing we’ve received from all over the country,” Flake said in a statement. “I’m very grateful to all who have shown their early support. This campaign is off to a great start.”

Flake recently escaped a primary challenge from Rep. Trent Franks, who announced Friday he would not run for Senate.

Franks had been in serious discussions about a bid before making the final decision, and his entrance would likely have forced a costly primary.
