At a Thursday morning press conference, United States Senator JON KYL announced that he is NOT running for re-election!

Speculation has been running rampant for months that Kyl wouldn't run.

The front runner to replace Kyl is Rep. JEFF FLAKE

On the Dem side, look for former AZ Governor & Homeland Security Secretary JANET "BIG SIS" NAPOLITANO to resign and run for the seat.

STATEMENT BY SENATOR McCAIN REGARDING SENATOR KYL’S ANNOUNCEMENT HE WILL NOT SEEK REELECTION

February 10, 2011

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) today released the following statement regarding Senator Jon Kyl’s (R-AZ) announcement that he retire from the United States Senate at the end of his term in 2013:

“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve with Jon Kyl and have him as my partner in representing the great state of Arizona. As a leader in the Senate and one of the most well respected members, he will be sorely missed. Jon will most assuredly go down in history as one of Arizona’s most effective advocates in Washington. I know once Jon leaves the Senate he will continue to serve his country and the people of Arizona, as he has so nobly for the last 26 years. Cindy joins me in wishing Jon and Caryll all of the very best as they begin this new chapter of life.”

Congressman Flake Releases Statement on Retirement of Senator Kyl

Kyl’s Retirement Will Create Huge Void

Washington, D.C. – Republican Congressman Jeff Flake, who represents Arizona’s Sixth District, today released the following statement regarding the announcement by Senator Jon Kyl that he will not seek reelection.

“Senator Kyl is the quintessential workhorse,” said Flake. “With his retirement, Arizona will lose a tireless advocate, the country will lose a stalwart on national defense and foreign affairs, and Republicans will lose a lodestar in the Senate.”

“While we can expect Senator Kyl to remain engaged in public policy and committed to Arizona’s interests long into the future, his retirement will create a huge void.”

“On a personal level, Senator Kyl has been a mentor for many years, and I’m extremely grateful for his friendship.”

Statement from Congressman Paul Gosar

WASHINGTON, DC –U.S. Congressman Paul Gosar, DDS (AZ-01) on Senator Jon Kyl’s announcement that he will be retiring at the end of his term:

“Today is a sad day for Arizona- Senator Kyl is an extraordinary statesman and his leadership in Congress will be missed. I look forward to working closely with him over the next 22 months on policy that is important for the people of Arizona and the nation. Senator Kyl is a stalwart proponent of a smaller government and commonsense reforms. I, and Arizona, will miss him but I know that we are blessed to have been represented for all these years by someone with his strong character, integrity and reasoned voice.”

Franks Statement on Kyl Retirement Announcement

February 10, 2011 - Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) gave the following statement today in light of Sen. Jon Kyl's (R-AZ) announcement that he will not seek a fourth term in 2012.

"Over the course of the past 27 years, I have come to have the privilege of calling Senator Kyl not only my colleague in the U.S. Congress but also a very dear friend. Since 1987 Jon Kyl has served the people of Arizona with unparalleled honor, integrity, and a deep, unswerving commitment to principle, and his service has led him to truly become a lion in the Senate, personifying exactly what a U.S. Senator should be to this country. All of us should aspire to be the kind of individual who would serve his country in such a way.

"Jon has been a fierce defender of the Constitution on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and he has fought for the appointment of federal judges who would share that fundamental commitment. His relentless dedication to strengthen and protect our national defense— including advancing our missile defense and defending against jihadist terrorism and the growing Iranian nuclear threat— have been hallmarks of his incredible service in the U.S. Senate.

"He has also been unapologetic and unwavering in his commitment to protecting innocent life, including the unborn.

"It is a loss to this nation that this man will no longer be serving in the United States Congress. The Senate will not be the same without him.

"Above all, his integrity, sincerity, compassion, commitment to the cause of human freedom, and his love for others -- exemplified so wonderfully in his strong devotion to his wife and family -- leaves a legacy for his children and those who follow that most men only dream of.

"I will feel the absence of his leadership and friendship deeply, and I wish him God's greatest blessings in his future endeavors. Jon will always have my deepest affection and gratitude for his friendship and his service to our nation."

Congressman Franks is serving his fifth term in the U.S. House of Representatives and is a member of the Judiciary Committee, where he serves as Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Constitution and a member of the Subcommittee on Courts, Commercial and Administrative Law. He is also a member of the Armed Services Committee, where he serves on the Strategic Forces Subcommittee and the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities.
