PHOENIX - Rep. Jeff Flake officially declared he will run for the Senate seat to be vacated by Sen. Jon Kyl.
Flake is currently in his sixth term representing Arizona's sixth congressional district.
"The country is facing a fiscal crisis, and the United States Senate is at the center of the debate about how to bring federal spending under control," he said. "Senator Jon Kyl has given all of the eventual candidates in this race an excellent model of how to best serve Arizona and the country. He’s set the bar extremely high, and I’ll do my best to meet that standard."
Kyl announced last Thursday he will step down next year after three terms in office.
The decision to retire by Arizona's junior senator set off an immediate scramble for what will be Arizona's first open Senate seat in 18 years.
Kyl, who has become a leading conservative voice on foreign affairs, said at a news conference it was time to give someone else a shot at the seat he's held since 1994. He said he announced his retirement now to give fellow Republicans time to raise money and formulate their campaign strategies.
"I think it's probably going to be a pretty good year for Republicans," Kyl said of 2012. "We have a very strong bench of candidates who might want to seek the position. With all due respect to my Democratic friends, I don't think there are as many candidates on their side that would have the prospect of winning."
Flake said he plans to being a statewide campaign as soon as his congressional schedule allows.

Rep. Jeff Flake will be a WONDERFUL Senator! He will be an excellent successor to Sen Jon Kyl!
It's going to be fun to watch the PEEING RED RACISTS & the MORON ALLIANCE Trolls who, if you put them all in the same room & passed the hat, you wouldn't get 2 nickels to rub together, go apoplectic over Flake's entrance into the race.
PLEASE make my day & run JD Huskster....it would be fun to destroy Team Hayworth once again!
I have long been a supporter of Sen. KYL. In order to secure my vote, his wannabe replacement will have to to be ANTI-amnesty and totally dedicated to first securing our borders. I do not believe that Jeff Flake meets that criteria. Unless he can PROVE otherwise, he will NOT get my vote.
