MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY 2011 EVENTS IN PHOENIX!

Here is a list of events scheduled today for the celebration of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in Phoenix:

Day Camp: 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Kids in kindergarten through Grade 5 take part in arts and crafts, and computer and music activities. ASU's Day of Service 2011: 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Community members and groups, and Arizona State University students can volunteer and complete service projects around the school. Lunch is provided. Mesa Parade: 11 a.m. Participants include marching bands, the Mesa Police and Fire departments, and community leaders. The parade begins at the intersection of University Drive and Center Street and proceeds south on Center Street to First Avenue. Free. 58 W. Main St. 480-890-2613. mesamlk.org.






Celebration Festival: noon-5 p.m. Live entertainment, food booths, medical screenings, a job fair and vendor booths are part of celebration of MLK's life. Diversity Awards Brunch: 9:30 a.m. The Tempe Human Relations Commission hosts this 13th annual brunch. The keynote speaker is Betty Greathouse, a retired education professor at Arizona State University. Awards are presented to more than 10 people who have demonstrated leadership on civil-rights issues. Reservations required. Presented by Veolia Transportation. $5. Mass: 2 p.m. The city of Phoenix's oldest Catholic church holds a mass to honor the message and memory of the civil-rights leader. A prelude begins at 2 p.m. that features choir performances and a rendition of the "I Have a Dream" speech delivered by Darren Handy. Mass begins at 3 p.m. with Bishop Shelton J. Festival and March: 9 a.m. A march begins at the church and proceeds to Margaret T. Hance Park, 1202 N. Third St., where a festival featuring food and activities begins at 10 a.m. Free admission. East Valley Basketball Classic: Noon. Five East Valley high-school basketball games are played. The Chandler vs. Hamilton girls' teams face off at noon, followed by the Highland vs. Mountain View girls' matchup at 1:30 p.m. The Skyline vs. Mountain Pointe boys' game begins at 3 p.m., followed by the Chaparral vs. St. Mary's boys at 4:30 p.m. Mesa High vs. Mountain View boys' game begins at 6:30 p.m. $10, $7 for students.
