Franks Responds to Reports of Iranian Book Celebrating Suicide Bombers Found in Arizona Desert

January 27, 2011 — Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) released the following statement today in response to reports that an Iranian book celebrating suicide bombers had been found in the Arizona desert just north of the U.S.-Mexico border.

"It remains my oft repeated conviction that border security and national security are inextricably linked," Franks said, "and consequently that we cannot deal with our immigration problem until we take the first, absolutely critical step of securing our borders.

"Every year, thousands of individuals cross the border into the United States without being detected, and many of them hail from countries that are known terrorist havens, including Iran, Lebanon, and Yemen; and many are unfriendly to America. If terrorists ever come across our border with nuclear weapons or other WMDs, they become capable of holding an entire city hostage and our entire national security paradigm changes completely.

"This book is a grave reminder of the mindset and intent of the indescribably dangerous enemy we face.

"Moreover, the Obama Administration still does not seem to take the threat of our porous border seriously. Each day that passes that we do not take serious steps to address this problem magnifies its reality and endangers the lives of literally millions of innocent American men, women, and children.

"I call upon Secretary Napolitano and President Obama to take responsibility for the federal government's abject failure to secure the border, and to actually present a plan to Congress to put into place the adequate staff, equipment, fencing, and technology needed to provide for the security of the American people."

Congressman Franks is serving his fifth term in the U.S. House of Representatives and is a member of the Judiciary Committee, where he serves as Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Constitution and a member of the Subcommittee on Courts, Commercial and Administrative Law. He is also a member of the Armed Services Committee, where he serves on the Strategic Forces Subcommittee and the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities.
