Rep. Schweikert Sworn into the 112th Congress

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman David Schweikert released the following statement after he was sworn in as a member of the 112th Congress. This is his first term representing Arizona’s 5th District. Schweikert will serve on the Budget, Small Business, and Science and Technology Committees:

“I would like to express my gratitude to the people of Arizona who sent me to represent them in Washington and continue in service to our Country. It is an honor that I do not take lightly. I pledge to remain accessible, accountable, and absolutely focused on the values that brought me here. I am eager to begin restoring our economic future, creating an open and transparent Congress, and reforming a health care system that puts the patient first. We have watched long enough as Washington politicians have traded away our fiscal sovereignty and the very freedoms of future generations of Americans.š It is our moral obligation to tackle our debt and deficit and begin to bring fiscal responsibility to our federal budget by controlling the size and cost of government. Today, as we start with a new Majority, I look forward to working hard to make a positive impact for the people of the Fifth Congressional District of Arizona and their future.”

Dan Quayle: Watching son take oath is 'magical'

January 5, 2011

Former vice president Dan Quayle is one proud father.

Quayle was in the House chamber today as his son, Ben, took the oath of office as a congressman representing Arizona's 3rd District. Ben, 34, was born three days after Quayle was first elected to Congress in 1976.

"In some ways it is more special" than being sworn in as vice president," the elder Quayle told our Gannett colleague Chuck Raasch. "It is certainly more magical to have your son sworn in to be a member of Congress."

The elder Quayle, of course, served as President George H.W. Bush's second in command. After the House swearing-in ceremony today, the former vice president could be seen chatting with Republican lawmakers and introducing his son to some old friends.

The younger Quayle succeeds Republican John Shadegg in a Phoenix-area district. During the GOP primary, Quayle made headlines with his campaign video saying "Barack Obama is the worst president in history."

Congressman Paul Gosar is Sworn into Office

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Congressman Paul Gosar, DDS (AZ-01) was sworn into office. Speaker Boehner presided over the ceremony while Gosar was surrounded by his family who joined him for this historic occasion. Below is a statement from Gosar:

“This is truly a humbling and energizing moment. The American people have spoken and they want to bring an end to business as usual in Washington. I am looking forward to going to work on behalf of Arizona’s First Congressional District and listening to the ideas of all the individuals, seniors, small businesses, Tribal Nations and community that I represent. When we work together we will find commonsense solutions to the problems our nation faces.”
