Arizona U.S. Senator John McCain said late Tuesday that he plans to opposed a $1 trillion spending bill brought forth by Senate Democrats.
Mr. McCain denounced the bill on grounds of a number of earmarks included in the measure.
“In the short time I’ve had to review this massive piece of legislation – I’ve identified approximately 6,488 earmarks totaling nearly $8.3 billion,” the Arizona U.S. Senator said.
Mr. McCain took issue with number of earmarks including $208,000 beaver management in North Carolina, $413,000 for peanut research in Alabama and $165,000 for maple syrup research in Vermont.
The Arizona Republican has made voting against earmarked legislation a key component of his political philosophy in recent years.
Referencing nearly a decade of legislation, Mr. McCain said the current spending bill “is shameful and we should be embarrassed.”
The bill, which was largely crafted by Democrats, goes directly in opposition of a pledged taken by incoming Republican U.S. Senators, many of whom say they plan to oppose earmarked legislation.
