HORNE CRITICIZES 9TH CIRCUIT RULING AGAINST CITIZENSHIP REQUIREMENT FOR VOTER REGISTRATION

PHOENIX – Republican Attorney General nominee Tom Horne says today's decision by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to strike down Arizona's voter-approved law requiring voters to prove their U.S. citizenship in order to register endangers the sanctity of the ballot.

"The Ninth Circuit has made a terrible decision in this case, and if elected Attorney General, I will pursue this to the U.S. Supreme Court," Horne said. "It is irresponsible for the courts to weaken the fundamental truth that citizens - and only citizens - should have the right to vote in our elections. The voters of Arizona wisely chose in 2004 to require proof of citizenship prior to registering because the right to vote – as in all other democracies – belongs to citizens."

He added, "Creating a common-sense method to ensure the sanctity of the voting process clearly does not place an unreasonable burden on someone who wants to vote. The only people who should be troubled by this requirement are those who would seek to game the electoral process for nefarious purposes. It is those people whom the Ninth Circuit has absurdly chosen to protect. This is a terrible mistake, and one I hope to see corrected by the Ninth Circuit as a whole or by the U.S. Supreme Court."
