Nearly 44,000 Arizonans join voter rolls since end of July


More than 3.14 million voters now registered for state’s General Election






PHOENIX – Tens of thousands of new voters registered in time to cast a ballot in Arizona’s General Election on Nov. 2, according to new figures released Thursday by Secretary of State Ken Bennett.

As of the General Election registration deadline on Oct. 4, the state had 3,146,418 active, registered voters. That’s an increase of 43,542 from the state’s last registration report at the end of July, and nearly 160,000 more registered voters than when the state conducted its 2008 General Election two years ago.

“I’m proud that so many Arizonans are tuning-in to the political process and taking the next step by registering to vote,” Secretary Bennett said. “It’s now important that these same people close the deal by casting a ballot between now and the close of polls at 7 p.m. on November 2nd.”






Every county but one – Navajo County – added new voters in the latest registration report. The largest registration increases were reported in Maricopa County, which gained 24,593 new voters, and Pima County, which added 8,738.






The Arizona Republican Party added more than 12,000 voters between the end of July and the latest report, giving the state GOP 1,131,802 active, registered members.

The state Democratic Party grew by nearly 1,700 members, with the party now claiming 1,002,937 active, registered voters.

 The state Libertarian Party added 239 registered voters, giving it 24,382 in Arizona, and the Green Party added 235 of its own.

As of the latest report, the Arizona Green Party had 4,820 active, registered voters.






The largest registration increase was reported among independent voters or those unaffiliated with a recognized political party. Since the end of July, the ranks of independent voters in Arizona grew by nearly 29,000 members. As of Oct. 4, Arizona had 982,477 independent or unaffiliated voters, lumped together as “other” for tabulating purposes.

“It’s fantastic that so many Arizonans are choosing to register to vote this election season,” Secretary Bennett said. “But it’s equally important that people know that our office is working in coordination with its county partners to ensure that only Arizona residents and American citizens are able to register to vote, as required by state law. Safeguarding Arizona elections is a two-step process: Prove your citizenship when registering to vote and bring proper ID when going to the polls on Election Day.”
