The bad news keeps coming in for Harry Mitchell. Real Clear Politics no longer considers the race a toss-up, but now identifies it as "leaning Republican." It also ranks the race as the 35th House seat most likely to switch parties. Considering conservative estimates are that Republicans will take back 40 seats in the House, it's within that margin of seats we take back.
Grijalva Refuses to Extend Middle Class Tax Cuts
October 1st, 2010
For Immediate Release
Raul Grijalva claims to be champion of working and middle class families. So why did he vote to end this summer's congressional session before the House could vote on extending tax cuts to those families?
In the end, the House came down with a 210-209 vote to adjourn before they could address this critical issue. And it wasn't party line vote, 39 House Democrats-including Gabrielle Giffords, Harry Mitchell, and Ann Kirkpatrick-voted with Republicans to stay in session and extend these essential tax cuts for working families.
But not Mr. Grijalva. He voted to adjourn-despite having previously sent a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urging a vote on this issue before the end of the congressional session. See his letter here.
Which is why his statement today is so utterly baffling. Expressing disappointment that his party's leaders wouldn't allow a vote on the looming tax hike before midterm elections, Grijalva stated, "It is both a political and a governmental mistake. To me, it is a classic example of what's wrong with Washington."
"Well, Mr. Grijalva, if you wanted keep the tax cuts so badly, you could have. One more vote against adjournment--yours--would have kept the House in session," said Ruth McClung. "Arizona has the second highest poverty rate in the nation, families are out of work and hurting, and Mr. Grijalva wants to raise their taxes? There's just no logic in what he's doing. He's putting his own ideology ahead of the people he's supposed to represent."
Rep. Grijalva has called for a boycott of his home state, worked hard to prevent new businesses and jobs from coming to Arizona, and now he wants to increase the tax burden on families and small business owners struggling to make ends meet.
Ruth McClung wants to cut taxes for hardworking Arizona families, work to create jobs, balance our budget and put Americans back on the path to prosperity. The choice is clear. The choice is yours.
