Republican Senator John McCain holds a 21-point lead over Democratic challenger Rodney Glassman in his bid for reelection in Arizona.







A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in the state shows McCain earning 54% of the vote, while Glassman picks up 33% support. Eight percent (8%) prefer some other candidate, and six percent (6%) are still undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)






This race remains Solid GOP in the Rasmussen Reports Election 2010 Senate Balance of Power Rankings.






Last month, McCain led Glassman 51% to 37%. In surveys since April, s upport for McCain in matchups with Glassman has ranged from 53% to 57%, while the Democrat has gotten 28% to 37% of the vote.






McCain, a member of the U.S. Senate since 1987, is favored by 82% of Republicans and nearly one-out-of-four Democrats (23%). Sixty-two percent (62%) of Democrats support Glassman, the former vice mayor of Tucson and a relative political newcomer. The two are nearly tied among voters not affiliated with either major political party.

The survey of 500 Likely Voters in Arizona was conducted on October 3, 2010 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.






New numbers in the Arizona governor’s race will be released on Tuesday.






Twenty-six percent of voters in Arizona consider themselves part of the Tea Party movement, which is double the level of involvement nationally. Fifty-nine percent (59%) do not consider themselves part of the Tea Party, but 15% are undecided.






Eighty-one percent (81%) of Tea Party members and 43% of non-members support McCain. Forty-six percent (46%) of those who say they are not members favor Glassman.






Fifty-one percent (51%) of Arizona voters hold a favorable opinion of McCain, including 15% with a Very Favorable view of the longtime senator. Forty-eight percent (48%) regard him unfavorably, with 25% who have a Very Unfavorable View.






Glassman is viewed favorably by 34% and unfavorably by 45%, with eight percent (8%) Very Favorable and 19% Very Unfavorable. But Glassman is not nearly as well-known as McCain: 21% of the state's voters do not know enough about the Democrat to offer any kind of opinion.
