WHO IS RODNEY GLASSMAN? Glassman On Abortion

PHOENIX, AZ – U.S. Senator John McCain’s re-election campaign today continues its series of daily “Who Is Rodney Glassman?” fact checks outlining for voters the Democratic Senate candidate’s out-of-the-mainstream liberal views. Today’s issue: Glassman’s support for abortion.

Not surprisingly, Rodney Glassman’s liberal agenda extends to support for abortion. He opposes the repeal of Roe v. Wade and regularly boasts that his campaign is endorsed by Planned Parenthood.

During a 2007 debate for a seat on the Tucson City Council, Glassman made sure we all know exactly how he feels about this issue by explaining just how much his convictions carry into his personal life: ‘When I go about having sex with women, I like to know we're on the same page.”

Glassman sides with a minority of Americans on this issue amidst a conservative
shift in American’s values. Support for abortion has been declining since President Obama took office, and a May Gallup poll showed that less than a quarter of voters think abortion should be legal in all circumstances. In fact, more Americans consider themselves to be pro-life, rather than pro-choice.

McCain 2010 Communications Director Brian Rogers today issued the following statement on Glassman’s support of abortion:

“As we’ve seen time and time again, Rodney Glassman is completely out of step with Arizonans. His support of abortion is just another facet of his liberal agenda.”

FACT CHECK: GLASSMAN SUPPORTS ABORTION

Glassman Is Pro-Choice And Boasts The Endorsement Of Planned Parenthood:

Glassman Supports A Woman’s Right To Have An Abortion. “A woman’s reproductive rights are a woman’s alone and not the business of the government. She must be left to make the decision with the help of family, physicians and her own conscience and faith. Small-government conservatives who say they believe in the American people must also trust the American people to make the right moral decisions for themselves.” (“U.S. Senate: Rodney Glassman (D),” Green Valley News, 8/18/10)

During a Tucson City Council Candidate Debate, Glassman Divulged The Extent Of His Pro-Choice Convictions, Saying “When I Go About Having Sex With Women, I Like To Know We're On The Same Page.”

“Glassman has taken to supercillious pretense whenever he feels Lori Oien is talking more about him than the issues. (Glassman has yet to learn how much character matters when people are to be trusted with positions of power.) Yet he began a candidate-to-candidate Q and A session by asking Oien about her views on abortion, which is about as much a city issue as is foreign aid to sub-Saharan Africa. Then came the soul-bearing moment. ‘When I go about having sex with women, I like to know we're on the same page.’” (“Last One About Rodney Glassman,” Goldwater State, 10/30/07)

During One Of The Primary Debates, Glassman Bragged About Having The Endorsement Of Planned Parenthood.

“I’m a candidate that has a track record of being an advocate for women’s reproductive justice, which is why Planned Parenthood Federation of America has decided to endorse our campaign. And because of my track record of working on behalf of labor as a member of the Tucson City Council, I was endorsed by the AFL-CIO and their 180,000 members.” (Democratic Senate Debate, Phoenix, AZ, 7/27/10)

Glassman Said He Would Not Support Repealing Roe V. Wade.

“I would not support overturning Roe vs. Wade. This should remain a private decision between a woman, her doctor, her family and her faith. Abortions should be safe and rare. We should reduce the number of abortions by supporting education programs and ensuring that women understand all of the available options.” (“Candidate Q & A,” The Arizona Republic)
