Today in the Washington Examiner Sept 22, 2010

In Washington I'm often asked how many seats Republicans will pick up in the House and whether they'll win a majority in the Senate. But I'm seldom asked anything about the 37 races for governor that will be decided next month (except for Georgia, which will have a runoff if no candidate tops 50 percent). Yet governorships can be just as important in politics and public policy as seats in Congress. Four of our last six presidents were governors, not senators or congressmen, before serving as chief executive.

Michael Barone - The repeal Obamacare pledge

Robert Pear of the New York Times reports that House Republican leaders are determined to vote to repeal Obamacare and, knowing that Barack Obama would veto such a bill, are “determined to chip away at the law if they could not repeal it.” Will their members back them up? That’s the hope of Independent Women’s Voice, which has launched a Repeal Pledge which it’s asking members of Congress to sign.

Mark Tapscott - It's 'Mourning in America'

Mention "Morning in America" or "Citizens for the Republic" to a Reagan veteran and their eyes are likely to light up with bright memories of the star TV commercial of the 1984 re-election campaign, and the Citizens for the Republic (CFTR) foundation that kept Reagan's name in the lights between the 1976 and 1980 campaigns. Timothy P. Carney - New Jersey is Hollywood for subsidized people

Governor Chris Christie is riling all the right folks. His latest enemy is Hollywood. Christie, you see, killed a corporate welfare tax break for film production, and now he’s battling the legislature’s effort to reinstate it.

Julie Mason - Economy forces White House to downsize midterm strategy

Unable to campaign on health care reform or economic improvement, the White House is relying on a fall-back midterm strategy of empathy, modest gains and frequent reminders that the other party is worse.

The modified campaign message is clearly frustrating for President Obama, who increasingly bristles at criticism that his policies haven't worked and this week admonished Democrats to get realistic about the election stakes.
