Byron York - Obama has himself to blame for Muslim problem

It’s entirely possible that some people blurred the distinction between “Muslim roots” and “Muslim,” especially since Obama in Cairo celebrated what his campaign had once downplayed. The public may be doing the same thing now, particularly after Obama chose a White House Ramadan iftar dinner to make a high-profile statement in support of the Ground Zero mosque.

Since Smitty the barber first asked the question 25 years ago, Barack Obama has been reluctant to discuss his Muslim roots. Except, of course, when he’s been eager to discuss his Muslim roots. And roots aside, to the outside observer, Obama sometimes doesn’t appear to practice any faith at all. Put it all together, and is it any wonder the public is confused?

Michael Barone - Boss politics on Long Island

Is a major panjandrum in New York Republican politics trying to boot an election in order to maintain his own personal power? That’s the picture I get from the shenanigans in New York’s 4th congressional district.

Matthew Sheffield - The right to lie: Ninth Circuit says it exists

It may not be getting as much attention as the ruling on Proposition 8 but another California court (the famously liberal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals) made some waves recently by deciding that there is a right to lie.

Pending an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, people in the jurisdiction of the Ninth Circuit now have the ability to make false statements under First Amendment grounds.

Julie Mason - Grim jobs report undercuts talk of a recovery

A grim new jobs report dealt a serious blow to efforts by the White House to convince voters ahead of the November elections that the president’s economic recovery plans were working.

The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits increased by 12,000 to 500,000 last week, taking economists and the White House by surprise.

President Obama, on his way to a 10-day vacation with his family on Martha’s Vineyard, said the report underscores the need for Congress to act on a bill helping small business.

David Freddoso - Issa: White House fibbed on Gulf cleanup progress

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., says the White House released an unjustifiably rosy report on the progress of the Gulf cleanup, and falsely claimed that it had already been peer-reviewed.
