Senator McCain Endorses Romley in County Attorney Race

Senator McCain Endorses Romley in County Attorney Race

Describes him as “nationally respected prosecutor of unequaled integrity, toughness, and necessary experience”

Arizona senior senator John McCain today announced his endorsement of Interim County Attorney Rick Romley to continue his service to the residents of Maricopa County.

“If you believe, as I do, that experience matters -- that character matters -- then you’ll understand why I’m so proud to stand with Rick
Romley in the race for County Attorney,” McCain said. “Rick has spent nearly his entire life in service to others. From his service to our country in Vietnam, where he lost both legs during battle, to his relentless pursuit of justice for the victims of crime, Rick understands that doing what’s right, popular or not, is the true measure of service. It’s certainly the measure of a County Attorney.”

In announcing his endorsement, Senator McCain acknowledged the recent turmoil in county government and cited the need for a calm, tough, and honorable prosecutor who will use the powers of the office for the reasons they were intended. “The extraordinary powers to indict and prosecute come with the extraordinary responsibility to apply them honorably. Rick does. I almost always introduce him as ‘The Honorable Rick Romley’ -- not as a matter of protocol, but as a matter of fact,” McCain said.

Senator McCain added: “Rick has proven himself, time and time again, whether it was in the trenches during war or in the trenches fighting crime in our neighborhoods. He received the Disabled American Veterans’ Presidential Unsung Hero Award, and was inducted in the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame, and he has earned a national reputation for tough prosecution of violent criminals, gang members, and corrupt government officials. And he has done all this while maintaining a fiscally responsible office.”

Senator McCain concluded: “I am proud to join police officers and firefighters across the Valley who want to keep Rick Romley as their partner in keeping our community safe.”

Romley, who served 16 years as County Attorney before stepping down six years ago, called Senator McCain’s endorsement “enormously gratifying, considering his own lifetime of service and sacrifice, on so many levels, to our nation, our state, and our community.”
