Another poll is showing Arizona Sen. John McCain far ahead of challenger J.D. Hayworth, the former conservative talk show host and onetime congressman, as the two head toward the state's Aug. 24 GOP primary.
McCain leads Hayworth by 54 percent to 34 percent with 7 percent preferring some other candidate and 6 percent undecided in a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted July 21.
In May's Rasmussen survey, McCain had led by 52 percent to 40 percent. The poll follows one conducted June 30-July 11 by the Behavior Research Center of Arizona, which put McCain out in front by 64 percent to 19 percent.
McCain is seen favorably by 62 percent of likely Republican primary voters and unfavorably by 37 percent.
Hayworth is seen unfavorably by 56 percent and favorably by 41 percent.
But the most telling figures are for those who see the candidates "very" favorably or unfavorably.
Thirty-two percent see McCain "very" favorably -- twice the number for Hayworth -- while 33 percent see Hayworth "very" unfavorably, almost twice the number for McCain.
Hayworth has not been successful in his effort to outflank McCain from the right.
While Hayworth fares better among conservatives than the overall Republican electorate, McCain still leads him among that group by 50 percent to 37 percent with the rest preferring some other candidate or undecided.
