Rasmussen Reports™ - GOV. JAN BREWER TAKES COMMANDING LEAD!

Election 2010: Arizona Republican Primary for Governor
Arizona GOP Primary for Governor:

Brewer Now Draws 61% Support

Incumbent Jan Brewer now earns 61% support in Arizona’s Republican Primary race for governor, marking her second big monthly gain in a row.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely GOP Primary Voters in Arizona finds businessman Buz Mills a far distant second with 16% of the vote, followed by State Treasurer Dean Martin at 12%. Two percent (2%) prefer some other candidate in the race, and nine percent (9%) are undecided.

Brewer has had a remarkable surge in support since signing the state’s new immigration law and becoming a forceful national advocate of the measure despite criticism from President Obama, Mexican President Felipe Calderon and others.

Eighty-nine percent (89%) of GOP Primary voters support the immigration law, and 66% of those voters favor Brewer.

The 61% support for Brewer is up from 45% last month and 26% support the month before.

In March, before the health care law and immigration issues began to improve her standing, Brewer was in a virtual three-way tie for the nomination. She had drawn primary competition because of her unpopularity amidst the state’s budget problems.

The survey of 707 Likely Republican Primary Voters in Arizona was conducted on June 16, 2010 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

Eighty-four percent (84%) of GOP Primary voters now approve of the job Brewer is doing as governor. This is little changed from a month ago but up 30 points from April.

Ninety-three percent (93%) of GOP Primary voters say the immigration law is at least somewhat important in terms of how they will vote, with 77% who say it is Very Important. Arizona Republicans will pick their gubernatorial nominee in an August 24 primary.

A national telephone survey found that 56% of voters nationwide said their views on illegal immigration are closer to Brewer’s than to President Obama’s. Thirty-four percent (34%) said their views are more like the president’s. This followed a brief White House meeting between the two executives.

Given a 2012 election contest for president between Obama as the Democratic candidate and Brewer as the Republican, 44% of all voters supported the incumbent, while 39% preferred the governor – even though 54% had no opinion of Brewer.

Forty-seven percent (47%) of Republican Primary voters have a Very Favorable opinion of Brewer, up 17 points from a month ago, while just six percent (6%) view her Very Unfavorably.

For Martin, Very Favorables are eight percent (8%) and Very Unfavorables also eight percent (8%).

Mills is seen Very Favorably by 15% and Very Unfavorably by eight percent (8%).

At this point in a campaign, Rasmussen Reports considers the number of people with strong opinions more significant than the total favorable/unfavorable numbers.
