After picking up endorsements from both the NRA and AZ Right to Life this month, McCain's campaign is building momentum, which is coming at the expense of Hayworth's efforts to unseat the senior senator.
McCain turned in more than 16,000 signatures, 4,700 more than did Hayworth.
"I think they're (Hayworth campaign) are grasping at straws. I think they've lost the momentum in the last month or two and they're trying to get it back," one veteran campaigner who wasn't affiliated with either campaign told our reporter.
That perceived loss of momentum has also been accompanied by rumors that Hayworth is having fundraising troubles this quarter, after raising $1.1 million in the first quarter. (He had $681,000 on hand and $108,000 in debt for the campaign finance report due March 31.)
The danger is that they let McCain get too far away from them," said the source.
