Thomas calls audit of his old office unfair By Yvonne Wingett The Arizona Republic

How naïve of the Insider to assume the infighting among Maricopa County officials would subside with the departure of former County Attorney Andrew Thomas.

It has not.

Thomas, who resigned to run for state Attorney General, is now trying to thwart the county’s attempt to audit his old office’s general fund. Interim County Attorney Rick Romley last month asked the Board of Supervisors to authorize county auditor Ross Tate to review spending during Thomas’ tenure.

Thomas, however, is declaring a conflict. Ina May 3 letter to the Arizona Board of Accountancy, Thomas said he had “serious concerns about the independence, integrity and objectivity of the county employees assigned to this audit, as they are employees of people I’ve prosecuted and sued as County Attorney.”

Thomas said the timing of the audit, and the fact that it is being performed internally, is “very troubling." Thomas said he welcomes an audit of the general fund by a properly licensed outside CPA firm.
